Texts: - James 3:13-18,Proverbs 16:16“(How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver)
Let us start by explaining what the synonym black and white mean. It means clarity, simplicity, straightforward without obscurity.
What does it mean to be wise?
The adjective wise describes someone who has experience and a deep understanding. When you make a decision based on careful thought and good judgement, you’ve made a wise choice. ………Proverbs 14: 1, Ephesians 5:15, Matthew 7:24
Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgement, the quality of being wise. To avoid too much grammar, wisdom is the right application of knowledge. This means that understanding may open the door to knowledge but applying this knowledge wrongly could mess up the whole thing.
That you are filled with Holy Ghost does not mean you have Godly wisdom, if you fail to ask for it. James 1: 5
Knowledge: these are facts, information and skills acquired by a person through experience or education. It is familiarity or awareness gained by experience. When you have experienced or have knowledge of God, you will fear Him. Proverbs 1:7, Proverbs 2:6
Understanding is a psychological process related to an abstract or physical object, such a person, situation, or message whereby one is able to think about it and use the concept to deal adequately with that object.
These common words (wisdom, knowledge and understanding) are always a trio whenever they are being referred to - either secularly or scripturally. Anytime we hear someone mention wisdom, something inside of us will quickly complete it with knowledge and understanding.
Knowledge and understanding are lovely but the father of all is wisdom.
What does Godly wisdom do to those who have it:
1.It protects them- proverbs 4:6-7 “Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.” “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
2.It blesses them -proverb 3:13 “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.”
King Solomon requested for wisdom but God blessed him . 1 king 3:13“And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.”
3.It counts them amongst the wise- proverb 19:20 “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”
4.Its makes Jesus their wisdom- 1st Corinthian 1:30{ But God has given you a place in Christ Jesus, through whom God has given us wisdom and righteousness and salvation, and made us holy: Basic English Bible}
commentary1:30 Of him - Out of his free grace and mercy. Are ye Engrafted into Christ Jesus, who is made unto us that believe wisdom, who were before utterly foolish and ignorant.
5.Its serves as a sign that they are God pleases - Ecclesiastes 2:26“For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.”
How to get the Godly wisdom
1.Ask from God- James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
2.It is automatic when you fear God- Psalm 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”
3.It can come as a gift - Ecclesiastes 2:26 “For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.”
4.Prudence attracts it – Proverbs 8:12 I, “wisdom, dwell with prudence,
and I find knowledge and discretion. (ESV)
Meaning Careful or wise in handling practical matters; exercising good judgment or common sense: a prudent manager of money.
5.Read the Holy Scriptures and know the word of God- 2 Timothy 3:15
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
Characteristics of those who possess Godly wisdom- James 3:13-18
1. Purity —the word means clean or innocent. This is the wisdom that accomplishes good works with no false motives involved. It is person whose life is a testimony of pure character and honesty before God. - Matthew 5:8“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
2. Peaceable—doesn’t mean a push-over. It is someone who strives to be at peace. One who remains calm under stress and has let go of anxiety. Genesis 34:21“These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.”
3. Gentle—a person who is mild mannered and patient. 2 Samuel 22:36 “Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.”
4. Willing to Yield—not one who is easily persuaded but one who can listen to all sides and is willing to do the right thing even if it isn’t their idea. They have a teachable spirit (they don’t judge or react based on one side story 1 Peter 5:5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
5. Full of Mercy and Good fruits—their life is a life of compassion and honesty. They are known by their forgiving spirit and their impeccable character (not those that will say it is in heaven we would settle our fight). Ephesians 4:32 “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”
6. Without partiality—impartial. They do not take sides or involve themselves in frivolous arguments. They seek to be peacemakers. 1 Timothy 5:21“I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.”
7. Without hypocrisy—they are genuine. What you see is what you get. They will not tell one person one thing or another something else.
Matthew 23:28 “Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”
Conclusion
Wisdom is the principal thing, it has the ability to stand you out, it create and make ways where there seems to be no way.
Mathew 7:24 “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:”
Your age or your level of education is not a determinant factor.
Desire to have it, seek the face of God and you will surely have it.
