THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 10)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

Last week, we examined the dangers of covering up sins, as every

attempt to cover up sins not only lead to further sins but also to

destruction.

May the Lord Himself teach and bless us through His word in

Jesus Name.

NOT BY POWER NOR BY MIGHT

God's work cannot be done in the flesh or by self effort without the Spirit of

God and whatsoever anyone becomes in life is not by his own power but

by the power of God; for it is written, “Not by might nor by power but my

Spirit saith the Lord.”

I Sam. 18:8-12, 19:24, Zech. 4:6, Matt. 16:17, 2 Tim. 1:9, Jn. 15:5,

Rom. 13:14, Jn. 6:63, 2 Cor. 10:17, 1 Cor. 10:31.

TOPIC: Beware Of Deceit

MEMORY VERSE: “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:” – 1 Peter 2:22 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 13:6-10 (KJV)

6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:

7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

INTRODUCTION: The word deceit is a Greek word ‘Dolos’ derived from ‘Dello’ meaning to bait; this literally refers to a fishhook, trap, or trick which are various forms of deception. Deceit is a deliberate attempt to mislead, trick, snare, or bait other people, by telling lies. Baiting the trap is an attempt to catch the unwary victim. It is a desire to gain an advantage or preserve a position by deceiving others; the intentional misleading or beguiling of another. In the Scriptures, it is categorised with other forms of wickedness, such as cursing (Ps.10:7), hatred (Prov.26:24), theft, covetousness, adultery, and murder (Mk.7:21-22; Rom.1:29).

LESSON OUTLINES:

ATTRIBUTES OF DECEIVERS

BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION TO DECEIT

1. ATTRIBUTES OF DECEIVERS

Deceit describes the quality of the man who has a tortuous and a twisted mind; one who cannot act in a straightforward way; someone who stoops to devious and underhand methods to get his own way; a person who never does anything except with some kind of ulterior motives. Deceit is an attempt to trap or to trick and thus involves treachery. Deceit is a lie (Ps.119:118).

The Bible clearly states that:

Some workers are deceitful (2Cor.11:13; Jer.14:14; 23:26).

Hypocrites and false witnesses devise deceit (Job 15:34-35; Prov.12:17).

The wicked are full of deceit (Rom.1:29). They devise it (Ps.35:20; Prov.12:5); utter it (Ps.10:7; 36:3); work it (Prov.11:18); increase in it (2Tim.3:13); use it to each other (Jer. 9:5); delight in it (Prov. 20:17).

Deceit is a characteristic of the antichrist (2Jn.7).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Have you once met a deceitful person? Describe their personality.

2. BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION TO DECEIT

Deceit comes from the heart (Mk.7:21-22). It is one of the characteristics of an unregenerated heart (Jer.17:9). Deceit leads to lying (Prov.14:25); often accompanied by fraud and injustice (Ps.10:7; 43:1). Hatred is often concealed by deceit (Prov.26:24-26).

God abhors deceit (Ps.5:6). Our Lord Jesus Christ was also free from deceit (Isa. 53:9; 1 Pet.2:22) and believers must equally abhor it to enjoy abundant life in Christ (1 Pet.3:10; Ps.24:3-4). We must intentionally purpose against deceit and avoid it (Job 27:4; 31:5); pray for deliverance from those who are deceptive (Ps.43:1; 120:2; Ps.72:14); beware of those who teach it (Eph.5:6; Col.2:8); and lay aside every appearance of deceit (2 Col 4:2; 1 Thess.2:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: How can we protect ourselves from deceivers?

CONCLUSION: There is blessedness in being free from deceit (Ps.24:4-5; 32:2) and there is punishment for being deceitful (Ps.55:23; Jer.9:7-9).

QUESTIONS:

1 What are the attributes of deceit and deceivers?

2 What should be the believers’ disposition to deceit?

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Matthew 26:4 (KJV)

And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.

Tuesday: 1 Peter 3:10 (KJV)

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

Wednesday: Romans 1:29 (KJV)

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Thursday: Mark 7:21 (KJV)

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

Friday: Acts 13:10 (KJV)

And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

Saturday: 2 Corinthians 12:16 (KJV)

But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.

Sunday: 1 Thessalonians 2:3 (KJV)

TOPIC: Beware Of False Ministers

MEMORY VERSE: “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.” – 2 Peter 2:1

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 7:15-20 (KJV)

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: In the bid to make ends meet, falsehood is fast becoming the order of the day Just as there are Internet fraudsters i.e. scammers, quack practitioners. etc., there are some ‘ministers’ whose God is their belly (Philippians 3:18-19). Their false teaching/practices result in false churches which Jesus Himself called ‘the synagogue of Satan’ (Revelation 3:9). Believers must recognise false ministers and avoid becoming victims of their antics.

LESSON OUTLINES:

1. DESCRIPTION OF FALSE MINISTERS

2. AVOID BEING A VICTIM

1. DESCRIPTION OF FALSE MINISTERS

On the surface, it is difficult to spot a false minister because even Satan masquerades as an angel of light and his ministers’ cover-up as servants of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). However, Jesus warned us that “false Christs and false prophets” will come and will attempt to deceive even God’s elect (Matthew 24:23-27).

Some of the ways by which the Bible describes false ministers can help true believers recognise them. False ministers deny the divinity, sacrifice and humanity of Christ (1 John 4:1-3). Even when they minister or pray in ‘Jesus’ name,’ their hearts are far away from God (Matthew 15:8). Such ministers corrupt the gospel for selfish interest or to justify their immoral lifestyles (Philippians 3:19; 2 Corinthians 2:17, Micah 3:11). Some of these false ministers ‘called’ themselves into the ministry or sometimes derailed from God’s call to deceive gullible people (1 John 2:19). They do not preach the complete gospel (Bible doctrines) – Galatians 1:6-9, 2 Corinthian 11:4. They are not just false in their ministrations but also false in their living (Matthew 7:15-20). Some replace the preaching of the gospel with motivational talks and philosophies of men (Colossians 2:8). There are those who cause divisions among brethren (Rom.16:17-18) while others are out to exploit unsuspecting members (Acts 20:29-30). They trivialise the matters of eternity, preach what people want to hear and hardly preach holiness, Heaven, hell, etc. (Isaiah 30:9-11, 2 Timothy 4:3-4). They usually perpetuate falsehood in the name of miracles (Matthew 24:24).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss how the church can halt or repel the activities of false ministers.

2. AVOID BEING A VICTIM

Many people walk into the web of false ministers due to:

Lack of knowledge (Isaiah 5:13, Hosea 4:6).

Impatience (Psalm 27:14, Hebrews 10:36).

Despair in the bid to get rich quick (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

Anxiety about what the future holds.

Quest to find answers to certain crucial life questions (1 Kings 22:6-8).

To avoid being a victim of false ministers, children of God should be watchful (Matthew 26:41), prayerful (James 5:16b), sober (1 Peter 5:8), patient (Luke 21:19), rooted in the word of God (Colossians 3:16), filled with the Spirit of God (Romans 8:6) and be able to discern the spirits in operation at every instance (1 John 4:1, Matthew 24:4-5). Anyone that is already a victim should retrace their steps back to Christ and cry for help (Matthew 11:28-30, Psalm 46:1).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention what should be done not to become a victim.

CONCLUSION: The best way to guard yourself against falsehood and false ministers is to know the truth (Jn.8:32). To spot a counterfeit, study the real thing.

QUESTIONS:

How can false ministers be best described?

Mention four (4) keys to entering falsehood.

FURTHER READINGS:

Monday: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 (KJV)

1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Tuesday: 2 Corinthians 11:1-4, 13-15 (KJV)

1 Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me. 2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15: 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Wednesday: Matthew 7:15-20 (KJV)

Thursday: Galatians 1:6-9 (KJV)

6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Friday: 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJV)

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Saturday: 1 John 4:1-3 (KJV)

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Sunday: 2 Corinthians 2:14-17 (KJV)

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. 15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: 16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

ASSIGNMENT: Can a true minister of God become a false minister? Identify five (5) causes (2×5=10 Marks).

INTRODUCTION

In the last part of this series, we learnt that the fall of a leader

enslaves his followers and that if God be for us who can be

against us. Today as we continue in our studies, may the Holy

Spirit teach and revive us through His word in Jesus Name.

1. SIN BEGETS SINS

There is a great danger in finding excuse for and to cover up sins as

every attempt to cover up sins always lead to further sins.

I Sam. 18:8-9, 29, Ps. 66:18, I Sam. 15:20, Prov. 28:133, Eccl. 4:4,

2. NOT BY POWER NOR BY MIGHT

God's work cannot be done in the flesh or by self effort without the

Spirit of God and whatsoever anyone becomes in life is “not by his

own power but by my Spirit saith the Lord”.

TOPIC: Conscience

MEMORY VERSE: “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.” – Acts 24:16 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 2:1-15 (KJV)

1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

INTRODUCTION: The Greek word translated “conscience” in all New Testament references is suneidēsis, meaning “moral awareness” or “moral consciousness.” The conscience is defined as that part of the human psyche that induces mental anguish and feelings of guilt when we violate it and feelings of pleasure and well-being when our actions, thoughts, and words are in conformity to our value systems (John 8:9).

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE CONCEPT OF CONSCIENCE

CLASSES OF CONSCIENCE

1. THE CONCEPT OF CONSCIENCE

The New Testament concept of conscience is more individual in nature and involves three major truths. First, conscience is a God-given capacity for human beings to exercise self-evaluation (Acts 23:1; 24:16). Second, the conscience is a witness (Romans 2:14-15; Romans 9:1) and a base for holiness and sincerity (2 Corinthians 1:12). It witnesses both before God and men (2 Corinthians 5:11). Third, the conscience is a servant of the individual’s value system. An immature or weak value system produces a weak conscience, while a fully informed value system produces a strong sense of right and wrong. In a Christian’s life, the conscience can be driven by an inadequate understanding of scriptural truths and can produce feelings of guilt and shame disproportionate to the issues at hand. Maturing in the faith strengthens the conscience.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should discuss what their experiences have been with their conscience.

2. CLASSES OF CONSCIENCE

The New Testament identified a conscience that is “seared” or rendered insensitive as though it had been burnt with a hot iron (1 Timothy 4:1-2). Such a conscience is hardened and calloused, no longer feeling anything. A person with a seared conscience no longer listens to its promptings and can commit sin with recklessness, deceive himself into thinking all is well with his soul, and treat others insensitively and without compassion (Exodus 5:1-9).

A clear and right conscience is that inner freedom of spirit that comes from knowing that you are right with God and with other people (Acts 23:1; Matthew 5:23-24). As Christians, we are to keep our consciences clear (2 Corinthians 4:2) by obeying God (Psalm 119:11) and keeping our relationship with Him in good standing. We do this by the application of His word (John 17:17), renewing (Romans 12:2), and by softening our hearts continually. We consider those whose consciences are weak by treating them with Christian love and compassion (1 Corinthians 8:12). Listen to your conscience and do not make excuses for wrongdoings (1 Corinthians 10:29).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What do you understand by a weak conscience?

CONCLUSION: Every believer must exercise a living conscience that pleases God and is not offended by men.

QUESTIONS:

Describe the term ‘conscience’ from three biblical perspectives

Mention the classes of conscience

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Proverbs 28:1 (KJV) – The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Tuesday: Matthew 14:1,2 (KJV) – 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, 2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

Wednesday: John 8:9 (KJV) – And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

Thursday Acts 23:1 (KJV) – And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Friday: Acts 24:16 (KJV) – And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.

Saturday: 1 Corinthians 8:9, 12, 13 (KJV) – 9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

Sunday: 2 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV) – 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

ASSIGNMENT: What are the steps you take when your conscience pricks you? Mention at least five. (No Mark).

Sunday School Manual 23 July 2023

TOPIC: Beware Of Scoffers

MEMORY VERSE: “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,” – 2 Peter 3:3

BIBLE PASSAGE: Jude 1:11-18 (KJV)

11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.

17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;

18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Scoffer, in Greek, is ’empaiktes’ and it simply translates to a mocker. A scoffer mocks sin, Christ, twists God’s word for selfish gains, opposes the gospel and the things of God. The Bible uses scornful and scoffer interchangeably which all means mocker. Believers are warned to be careful and be on guard.

LESSON OUTLINES

TRAITS TO OBSERVE

THE DISPOSITION OF BELIEVERS

1. TRAITS TO OBSERVE

There are some peculiar traits that characterise scoffers. They deny the truths of Scripture and entice others to go along with their error (Jude 4). They refuse to believe the word of the Lord and despise God’s ministers (2 Corinthians 36:16). They question the second coming of the Lord Jesus, pointing out the lapse of time and mock those who still wait and yearn for Jesus’ appearance (2 Peter 3:4). They follow ungodly desires and cause divisions (2 Peter 3:3; Jude 18-19). They have a form of godliness but deny it’s power (2 Timothy 3:5). They present lofty-sounding ideas to lead people astray (2 Peter 2:1). They incite violent acts (Proverbs 29:8). They are proud leaders who make the judgement of God light (Isaiah 28:14-15).

2. THE DISPOSITION OF BELIEVERS

The proliferation of scoffers is a sign of the last days (2Peter 3:3). However, it is critically important that believers:

Take seriously the commands to study and meditate on God’s word (Psalm 1:1-2; Joshua 1:8).

Remain in Christ spotless and blameless (2 Peter 3:14; Ephesians 5:27).

Continue to look for the appearance of the Lord (Titus 2:13).

Weigh every teaching with the word of God (Acts 17:11).

Know that God is never slack concerning His promises (2 Peter 3:9)

Be established in their holy faith (Jude 20) and remain steadfast to the end (1 Corinthians 16:13; 1 Timothy 6:12).

Try all spirits (1 John 4:1) and grow in grace (2 Peter 3:18).

CONCLUSION

Beware of scoffers and refuse to be one (Psalm 1:1).

QUESTION

Who is a scoffer and what are his/her characteristics?

What should be the disposition of believers to scoffers?

Monday: 2 Chronicles 36:16 (KJV); But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

Tuesday: Nehemiah 2:19 (KJV); But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

Wednesday: Psalm 1:1 (KJV); Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Thursday: Psalm 31:18 (KJV); Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

Friday: Psalm 123:4 (KJV); Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

Saturday: Proverbs 1:7 (KJV); The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Sunday: 2 Samuel 12:9 (KJV); Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

ASSIGNMENT: Why do you think there are more scoffers these days than ever before? Give five (5) reasons (2×5=10 Marks).

There is a great danger in finding excuse for and to cover up sins as

every attempt to cover up sins always lead to further sins.

I Sam. 18:8-9, 29, Ps. 66:18, I Sam. 15:20, Prov. 28:133, Eccl. 4:4,

Rom. 1:28-29, I Jn. 3:15, Rev. 21:8.

2. NOT BY POWER NOR BY MIGHT

God's work cannot be done in the flesh or by self effort without the

Spirit of God and whatsoever anyone becomes in life is “not by his

own power but by my Spirit saith the Lord”.

I Sam. 18:8-12, 19:24, Zech. 4:6, Matt. 16:17, 2 Tim. 1:9, Jn. 15:5,

Rom. 13:14, Jn. 6:63, 2 Cor. 10:17, I Cor. 10:31.

TOPIC: Renouncing The Faith

MEMORY VERSE: “Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?” – Hebrews 10:29 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Hebrews 6:4-6 (KJV)

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

INTRODUCTION: Renouncing one’s faith is ‘apostasy.’ The term apostasy comes from the Greek word ‘apostasia’ meaning ‘defection,’ ‘departure,’ ‘revolt’ or ‘rebellion.’ Apostasy is the formal disaffiliation from, abandonment of, or renunciation of a religion by a person. It can also be defined within the broader context of embracing an opinion that is contrary to one’s previous religious beliefs. It is an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognise a religious faith. One who undertakes apostasy is known as an apostate.

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE CHARACTERISTICS

THE DANGER AND HOPE

1. THE CHARACTERISTICS

In the context of the Christian faith, there are two main forms of Apostasy: one is a falling away from key and true doctrines of the Bible into heretical teachings that claim to be “the real” Christian doctrine; the other, is a complete renunciation of the Christian faith, which results in a full abandonment of Christ (Heb.10:29).

Jude’s description of the character of the first Century apostates explains why he so strongly opposed them. Some believers today are toing the paths of the apostates of Jude’s day; they are ignoring scriptural warnings of past judgments on sins (Rom.15:4) such as that of unbelieving Israelites, fallen Angels (Jude 6; 2Pet.2:4), Sodom and Gomorrah (Jude 7; Gen.19:24-25).

They are becoming ungodly by moral perversion, defilement of the flesh, rebellion, boldly speaking evil against people and things they do not understand such as Spiritual beings and dignitaries (Jude 8-10). They are ignorant about God; proclaiming false visions, self-destructive, grumbling, fault finding, self-satisfying, using arrogant words and false flattery; they make a mockery of God (Jude 15-18).They ignore God and His word like Cain; they practice greed and deceit like Balaam, and rebel against spiritual authorities like Korah (Jude 11). Apostates are sensual (Jude 19). They deny the Lordship of Jesus Christ (Titus 1:15-16).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss the problems an apostate could bring to the body of Christ in particular and the society at large.

2. THE DANGER AND HOPE

Ultimately, an apostate eventually falls away and departs from the truth of God’s word and His righteousness (1Jn.2:19). We can deduce from Hebrews 6:4-6 that by human intervention, it is impossible to renew those who abandon their Christian faith. However, the Bible makes it clear that with God nothing shall be impossible (Lk.1:37; Jer.32:27).

Therefore, if a child of God abandons his faith for whatever reason (including apostasy), there is but one route of return-that of repentance, acknowledgment of wrong, and the humble petition for God’s pardon (2Chr.7:14; 2Cor.7:10; 1Jn.1:9).

It is critical, now more than ever, that every believer pray for discernment, combat apostasy, and contend earnestly for the faith that was once and for all delivered to the saints.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss how a true believer can guard against sliding into apostasy.

CONCLUSION: Apostasy is a dangerous trend that can lead to a point of no return. Be watchful.

How dangerous is apostasy?

THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 8)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we learnt that the departure of the

Holy Spirit in the life of a person opens door for the evil spirit and

that praises could be a powerful weapon of warfare in the hand of

the believers.

Today, as we continue in our studies, may the Lord teach and

shower His blessings upon us through His word in Jesus Name.

1. IF GOD BE FOR US

The Almighty God is the power behind every victory and success we

have in life as there is virtually nothing we can do of our own without

God. If God be for us, who can be against us, but if God be against us,

who then can fight for us.

I Sam. 17:1-9, 10-11, Rom. 8:31, 11:6, 11, 13:4-5, 14:18, 22-23, I

Sam. 14:31, 47-48, 15:1-9, 16:14, Jud. 16:20, Jn. 15:5, Rom. 6:1-2.

2. THE DOWNFALL OF A LEADER ENSLAVES THE FOLLOWERS

The role of a leader in the lives of the followers is so significant that

when a leader wins, his followers also win. In the same manner, when

a leader fails, his followers become enslaved.

I Sam. 17:8-11, Zech. 13:7, Mk. 14:27, Ezek. 34:5, Ex. 14:23-28,

Isa. 56:10, Matt. 15:14, Lk. 6:39-40, Jn. 10:14-15, Heb. 12:2.

TOPIC: Reprobacy

MEMORY VERSE: “Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.” – 2 Timothy 3:8

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 1:18-25 (KJV)

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Reprobacy is the state or character of being a reprobate. A reprobate is an unprincipled or depraved person. The Greek word translated “reprobate” in the New Testament is ‘adokimos,’ which literally means “unapproved, i.e. rejected; by implication, worthless.” It is that which is rejected on account of its own worthlessness (Jer.6:30). Many people have wondered if at this point a person may be beyond hope. It is imperative, therefore, for believers to study the nature and dangers of reprobacy.

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE NATURE OF REPROBATES

DANGERS OF REPROBACY

1. THE NATURE OF REPROBATES

There are some pointers to knowing someone that can be referred to as a reprobate. Such persons usually have the desire to suppress the truth with wickedness (Rom.1:18; 2Tim.3:8). They wilfully reject God in their imaginations and actions (Rom.1:21; Tit.1:16). People with reprobate minds choose to worship the creature rather than the Creator (Rom.1:23-25; Jer.10:14). They commit all manner of sins and have no limits or restrictions on sinful behaviours (Rom.1:29-31; Eph.5:3). Reprobates do not only hold onto and continue in their wicked behaviours, they encourage and celebrate others who imitate them (Rom.1:32; Ps.50:18). Those with reprobate minds do not have the Spirit of God and live only for themselves (Tit.1:16).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What can true believers do to win the reprobates to Christ?

2. DANGERS OF REPROBACY

The Bible warns against reprobacy because it leads to a point where God withdraws His longsuffering to save but gives them over to a degenerated mind (2Pet.3:9; Rom.1:28) to:

Face the wrath of God (Rom.1:18).

Become unclean and dishonour their bodies between themselves (Rom.1:24).

Practice vile affections e.g. homosexuality, bestiality, etc. (Rom.1:26).

Do those things which are not convenient (Rom.1:28).

Be filled with all unrighteousness (Rom.1:29-31).

Ignore impending judgment and continue in sin (Rom.1:32).

Nevertheless, there is no heart or mind that God cannot change if that person approaches Him in genuine repentance (Isa.1:18; Jn.6:37). People toing the path of reprobacy should repent and turn to God for mercy because there is grace and hope for them (Ps.51:17; Isa.55:7; Rom.10:13).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why are there so many reprobates around us?

CONCLUSION: Be careful to guard your mind and avoid the gradual drifting, shifting and twisting of thought that moves people towards reprobacy (Rom.12:1-2).

QUESTIONS:

Describe the nature of reprobates

What are the dangers of reprobacy?

FURTHER READING:

Monday: 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV); The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Tuesday: Colossians 3:5 (KJV); Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Wednesday: Jeremiah 6:30 (KJV); Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the Lord hath rejected them.

Thursday: 1 Samuel 3:13 (KJV); For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

Friday: 1 Kings 21:22 (KJV); And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.

Saturday: Hosea 4:17 (KJV); Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.

Sunday: Hebrews 6:8 (KJV); But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five things a believer can do to avoid reprobacy? (2×5= 10 marks).
