THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 7)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we learnt that God is not a man that

He should repent and that whatsoever a man soeth the same

shall he reap.

Today, as we continue in our studies, may the Lord Himself teach

and bless us richly through His word in Jesus Name.

1. DEPARTURE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT OPENS DOOR FOR EVIL

SPIRIT

Believers are the temple of God where the Holy Spirit dwells. The

moment we defile the temple or refuse to do the will of God, the Holy

Spirit departs. And since the temple is vacant, an evil spirit may find

its way there by God's permission.

I Sam. 16:14, I Cor. 3:16-17, Jud. 9:23, Lk. 22:3, I Kgs. 22:19-23,

Num. 14:42-43, Jos. 7:12, Jud. 16:20, Rom. 1:21-32, Lk. 11:26.

2. PRAISE IS A WEAPON OF DELIVERANCE

The high praise of God is a believer's weapon for worship and

spiritual warfare.

Intensive praise, worship and adoration has a powerful effect in the

spiritual realm to pull down demonic strongholds.

I Sam. 16:16, 23, 2 Kg. 3:15, Ps. 149:5-9, 2 Cor. 10:4-6, 2 Chr.

20:20-25, Ps. 22:3, Heb. 1:14, Acts 16:25-30, Ps. 50:23, Acts 2:47.

CONCLUSION

Has the Holy Spirit departed from you or you have not even received

Him into your life, repent from your sins and ask God for the

restoration of His Spirit in your life.

House Fellowship Leader Manual July 2023,

TOPIC: Taking Responsibilities

OPENING PRAYER: Father, let me remain in Your plan and programme for this end time in Jesus name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

MEMORY VERSE: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” – 1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)

BIBLE TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:1-5 (KJV)

1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Responsibility is an act of being answerable for an act performed or for its consequences. It is the state or fact of having control over someone. Many areas are waiting for believers to take firm responsibilities, At creation, Almighty God gave responsibility to the first family i.e. Adam and Eve i.e. “dress it and keep it’ – Genesis 2:15 and the day they failed on this task, they were cursed and expelled from the garden of Eden – Genesis 3:23.

LEADER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To let members understand that we are created by God to take responsibilities that will affect lives positively.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should:

See different areas required to make life meaningful to others.

Be established in the knowledge of dangers accrued to neglecting divine responsibilities.

TEXT REVIEW: 2 Timothy 2: 1-5

Hard times will come but we are enjoined to endure it.

As Christ’s soldiers, we shouid not be tied up vith worldily affairs.

Gods rules must be followed to avoid being defeated and disqualified.

TEACHING METHOD: Leader should use lecture and participatory method.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: AREAS OF TAKING RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Oneself: You are accountable for your well-being. In 2 kings 13:14, the Bible says Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. Take good care of yourself (health).

Family: Each family has responsibilities.

Spouse – Husband is to love his wife and never to treat her harshly nor take advartage of her – Eph. 5:25, Col. 3:19. wife, is to accept the authority of her husband and submit Eph. 5:22, 1 Peter 3:1. As parents, they are to bring up their children with discipline and instruction.

They must not provoke their children to anger and they must treat them well Ephesians 6:4. If the couple co-operate together, what is not enough today will become sufficient and even surplus in no time.

Financial Planning and Investment: As believers, we are to take responsibility of controlling our financial life, investment will bring future’s laughter. Stop being extravagant, never put your money or resources on what will not yield any profit or future financial freedom.

Wisdom demands that your spending and your savings should be considerable – Proverbs 4:7, 16:8

Service to God: Believers are to deplore their physical, spiritual, mental and financial resources to populate God’s kingdom. Pay your Tithes and Offerings – Malachi 3:8, win souls for God- Mark 16:15, help the helpless- 1 Timothy 5: 16, James 1:27 and invest in growing your local church and bless the servants of God. Philippians 4:16.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: DANGERS OF NEGLECTING TO TAKE UP RESPONSIBILITIES

(a) Divine Replacement 1 Samuel 15:26,28

(b) Loss of divine presence and relevance. 1 Samuel 16:15

(c) Withdrawal of divine privileges, Genesis 3:24

(d) Walking under Curse. Genesis 3:23

(e) Inability to end well. 1 Samuel 31:3-6

ACTIVITY: Let members define different responsibilities as mentioned above.

SUMMARY: Our Maker has inputted grace of resourcefulness to us as His creation therefore not being responsible is not in His divine agenda.

CONCLUSION: Taking responsibilities is a must to get divine accolades, avoiding responsibility guarantees divine wrath.

TOPIC: Biblical Fast

MEMORY VERSE: “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:” Daniel 9:3 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Daniel 10:2-3 (KJV)

2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.

3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

INTRODUCTION: Fasting, in the Bible, is total abstinence from pleasure-giving activities for a set time for the purpose of devoting oneself to seeking God. While there are many ways believers could fast, too often the focus is on abstinence from food. In this lesson, we shall examine different types of biblical fast, basic cautions, and reasons for fasting.

LESSON OUTLINES:

TYPES OF FAST IN THE BIBLE

REASONS AND BASIC CAUTIONS

1. TYPES OF FAST IN THE BIBLE

1 Food fast – This is abstinence from food/drinks. It may take the form of:

i. Regular fast: This is done by abstaining from all food, both solid and liquid. (2Chr.20:3). The fast is usually broken daily or periodically (Jer. 36:6).

ii. Partial fast: This is inspired by Prophet Daniel. All meat and animal products are disallowed. The Daniel Fast includes vegetables, legumes, whole grains, seeds, and water.

These guidelines are based on Daniel’s request of “nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink” (Dan. 1:8-14).

iii. Absolute or full fast: Where no food or water is consumed (Esth. 4:16; Acts 27:33). For instance, Moses, Elijah, and the Lord Jesus Christ did a forty-day absolute fast (Deut. 9:9; 1 Kgs. 19:7-8; Lk. 4:2).

Sex fast – The Bible also makes reference to ‘sexual fast’ (Ex. 19:15), married couples can mutually agree to abstain from sex for a short period of time in order to devote themselves to prayers (1Cor. 7:5).

‘Pleasure’ fast – Another way is to confine or isolate oneself from people and pleasurable things to a place as a means of worship, studying the Bible, and praying to God for a purpose (Lk.2:36-37; 5:16).Time alone with God requires discipline and avoidance of distractions.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention which of these fast they have had.

2. REASONS AND BASIC CAUTIONS

Fasting is far more about focus on God than abstinence from food or other things that give pleasure (Zech.7:5). Also, people fast for various reasons. Some for spiritual strength (Isa.40:30-31), supernatural revelation, wisdom and understanding (Ezr.8:21; Dan.9:22), supernatural breakthrough (Zech.8;19) repentance from sinful ways (Joel 2:12-13; Dan.9:3-5), spiritual hunger and demonstration of love for God’s people and burden for souls (2Cor.11:27-28; Matt.5:6) and sharing with the poor and destruction of wicked works, among others (Isa.58:6-7). Fasting helps to subdue the flesh (1 Cor.9:27), to bridle your tongue, to tame your temper and to move ‘stubborn mountains’ (Matt.17:14-21).

Believers should exercise some caution while fasting. For instance, fasting should be limited to a set time and for a clear purpose (1Cor.7:5; Esth.4:16). It is neither intended to punish the body nor a dieting method (Isa.58:5) but to redirect attention to God. It is a period to give up self – indulging activities – for a deeper fellowship with God (Matt.4:1-2). Anyone can fast, but some may not be able to fast from food-maybe for health related issues. However, everyone can temporarily give up something in order to draw closer to God (Ex.19:15).

Biblical fast is to be done in a spirit of humility and joyfulness (Matt. 6:16-18). It should not be to manipulate God or do evil (Isa.58:4; Acts 23:21). In breaking an ‘absolute and long fast,’ warm liquids, (not carbonated drinks) are advised and should be taken in bits.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Does inability to spend quality time in prayer nullify fast?

CONCLUSION: Ask God for wisdom (Jam.1:5) as regards how and for how long and what purpose He wants you to fast.

QUESTIONS:

Mention the types of fast in the Bible

Mention three reasons why believers fasted in the Bible.

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Matthew 21:22 (KJV)

22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Tuesday: 1 Corinthians 7:5 (KJV)

5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

Wednesday: Exodus 34:28 (KJV)

28 And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

Thursday: 1 Samuel 7:6 (KJV)

6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

Friday: Isaiah 58:2 (KJV)

2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

Saturday: 2 Corinthians 6:5 (KJV)

5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;

Sunday: Matthew 14:23 (KJV)

14 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five benefits you have derived or will derive from biblical fast (2×5=10 marks).

Sunday School 2 July 2023

TOPIC: Deferred Hope

MEMORY VERSE: “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.” – Proverbs 13:12

BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 66:10-14 (KJV)

10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:

11 That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

12 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

14 And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. However, when there is an uncomfortable or prolonged delay, weariness and heaviness of heart may set in. Sometimes, while in this valley of life, we fast, pray, work smart and even sow seeds of faith in our bid to find solutions, yet, there might still be a delay. In this lesson, we shall consider biblical examples and winning strategies while waiting.

LESSON OUTLINES:

SOME BIBLICAL INSTANCES

WHAT TO DO WHILE WAITING

1. SOME BIBLICAL INSTANCES

There were Bible characters who, despite their relationship with God, waited painfully and hoped patiently for their expectations to be met and were not disappointed in the long run (Prov.23:18; Rom.5:5). For instance, Abraham/Sarah as well as Hannah waited long for the ‘fruit of the womb’ – children (Gen.15:2; 1 Sam.1:2). David hoped painfully for deliverance from King Saul and his enemies (1Sam.19:18; Ps.3:1). Joseph had a dream that he would be great but was thrown into the pit, sold into slavery and imprisoned (Gen.37:5). Job lost his children, business, and health suddenly and hoped for restoration (Job 1:13-20; 14:7, 14). The children of Israel laboured and suffered for 430years in Egypt before God sent Moses to liberate them (Ex.12:40). The widow of the indebted prophet was exhausted until she cried to the prophet (2Kgs.4:1).

At the end of the day, Abraham and Sarah were visited by God and they got Isaac (Gen.21:1-5). Hannah received her testimony son (1Sam.1:20). David later got his deliverance and became a king (2Sam.6:21). Joseph’s dream became a reality. He became the ruler over the realm of Egypt and his brothers bowed to him (Gen.42:6-7). God blessed the end of Job more than his beginning (Job 42:10). The Israelites eventually got delivered from the Egyptians (Ex.14:26-29). The indebted widow of the prophet received divine assistance (2Kgs.4:1-7). Waiting patiently on God in times of distress is key (Isa.40:28-31).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why do you think so many people do not want to wait patiently on God to receive His promise?

2. WHAT TO DO WHILE WAITING

While waiting for your miracle:

Focus on the aspect of your life that is working (Isa.50:7) and give thanks to God rather than being sad over what you are yet to receive (Ps. 103:2).

Be optimistic about your long-awaited miracle (Ps.27:13) and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord (Lam.3:25-26).

Remember that God makes all things beautiful in His own time (Eccl.3:11).

Refuse to respond to discouragement (Mk. 10:46-52).

Encourage yourself in the Lord your God (1 Sam. 30:6).

Get your heart fixed on your purpose and aspiration (Neh.4:6).

Study the word of God to build your faith (Rom.10:17).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss the dangers the following are likely to face for not waiting patiently on God:

i. An individual.

ii. The Church.

iii. The Society.

iv. The Nation.

CONCLUSION: Hopelessness can lead to despair. Do not give up on God because He never comes late.

QUESTIONS:

1 Mention four (4) biblical examples of people who waited on God.

2 Mention three (3) things believers need to do while waiting on God.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention (5) emotional issues associated with deferred hope (2×5=10 Marks).

THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 6)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we learnt that it is better not to fall

than to rise and that on one is indispensable.

Today, as we continue in our study, may the Lord Himself

teach us we must change our attitude towards God and

towards sin.

However, when repentance is used of God, it may mean regret

or change of mind.

I Sam. 15:29, Num. 23:19, Zech. 8:14, Matt. 3:2, Acts 26:20,

Ez. 18:30, Acts 3:19, I Sam. 15:11,35, Gen. 6:6, Jer. 26:31, Ex.

32:14, Lk. 13:3.

1. WHATSOEVER A MAN SOWETH, HE SHALL REAP

Every man reaps according to what he sows. You cannot sow

corn and expects to reap beans, if you sow the seed of

wickedness or goodness, you shall reap accordingly. More often

than not, the measure of reaping is usually greater than sowing.

I Sam. 15:31, Gal. 6:7, Job 4:8, Prov. 22:8, Hos. 10:12, I Cor.

9:6, Ps. 126:5, Hos. 8:7, Rev. 14:15, I Cor. 3:13.

TOPIC: Plugged-In Knees

MEMORY VERSE: “And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.’’ Matthew 14:23 (NKJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 22:39-46 (KJV)

39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

INTRODUCTION: ‘Plugged-in knees’ simply refer to a life of constant prayers. A consistent and persistent prayer life was a regular practice and more of a lifestyle by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This exercise was pressed upon us more frequently by our Saviour, thus He encouraged His disciples to be fervent, consistent, and persevere in the place of prayer (Lk.18:1). He even propounded the parable of an unjust judge, who was overcome by an unrelenting widow, to do her justice contrary to his own inclination (Lk.18:1-7).

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE NEED FOR PERSISTENT PRAYERS

HOW TO PRAY REGULARLY

1. THE NEED FOR PERSISTENT PRAYERS

‘Plugged-in’ is to engage wholeheartedly in a task or to be connected. The need for ceaseless prayers is therefore emphasised in the Bible (1Thess.5:17) for various reasons. Some of these are:

To keep the communication line between God and His children open (Ps.55:17).

To be filled with the power of the Holy Ghost and be bold (Acts 4:31).

To be guided when there is a need to take a decision (Acts 1:24) or find direction (Gen.24:12).

For believers in Christ to enjoy the fullness of joy promised them by God all the time (Jn.16:23-24).

To remain standing, though the days are evil (Eph.5:16) and full of sin, error, subtle heretical seducers, and sharp persecutions (2Tim.3:13-14; Matt.24:12-13).

To stay connected to the parent stock, as a branch, and be fruitful. (Jn.15:5-6).

To be able to withstand and confront the forces of wickedness that sought to destroy God’s children (Eph.6:12-13).

To cast out unclean spirits (Matt.17:19-21).

For restoration (Judg.16:28) and when agonised (1Sam.1:10).

To bring the flesh under (Matt.26:41; 2Cor.10:3-5) and always look up unto God (Ps.5:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should discuss why they find it difficult to pray persistently.

2. HOW TO PRAY REGULARLY

We pray frequently when we take prayer as a daily task (Ps.141:2). Deliberately pray in the Spirit (Eph.6:18; Jude 20). Live in the reality, that there is a need to pray without ceasing (1Thess.5:17; Mk.14:38). Put God first on any issue by contacting Him through prayers (Ps.37:3-5). Be actively involved in praying regularly for others (Col.1:9). Give oneself to prayers (Ps.109:4). Delight in God when praying (Job 22:26-27). Pray with confidence believing that God hears and answers prayers (1Jn.5:14-15). Pray everywhere – even in seemingly odd places like the kitchen, bus, street, playground, etc. (1Tim.2:8).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Are there places or situations a Christian cannot pray?

CONCLUSION: Constant prayer is a necessity for a close walk with God.

QUESTIONS:

Why should believers pray?

How can believers pray regularly?

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Malachi 1:11 (KJV)

11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.

TOPIC: Vessels For The Master’s Use

MEMORY VERSE: “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” – Ezekiel 22:30 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Jeremiah 18:1-6 (KJV)

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: God does not necessarily need our strength or strong points to use us. Oftentimes, He delights in using our weakness, because whenever He does, we do not get to share in His glory. God wants us to be examples to others of what He can do in and with us if only we are willing and obedient to do His will. God is still looking for vessels to use.

LESSON OUTLINES:

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF VESSELS GOD USED

GOD’S REQUIREMENTS AND REWARDS

1. BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF VESSELS GOD USED

God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). There are biblical examples of vessels that God used despite their weaknesses or shortcomings. These include:

Moses: A fearful man (Ex.2:14), of low self-esteem (Ex.3:11) and stammerer (Exo.4:10). He was chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from age-long captivity (Num. 12: 6-8).

Gideon: A man of doubt (Jug.6:11-13; 6:36-40) and low esteem (Judges 6:14-15). He became the vessel chosen to liberate his people from the Midianites (Jug. 7:19-25).

David: He was the least in his father’s house (1 Sam.17:14a; 16:11-12), an adulterer (2 Sam.11:2-4) and apparent murderer (2 Sam 11:14-17). He became a man after God’s heart (1Sam. 13:14).

Peter: An unlearned fisherman who slept instead of praying (Matt.26:37-44) and even denied Christ three times (Mk.14:66-72). He was mightily used of God (Matt.16:16-19, Luke 22:31-32; Acts 2:40-41; 3:6-8).

Paul: when he was Saul, persecuted the Church, arrested and aided the killing of many believers (Acts 8:1-3). Jesus converted and made him a chosen vessel especially to the gentile nations (Acts 9:1-15).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The teacher should ask each student to mention at least one weakness they have and how they can overcome it.

2. GOD’S REQUIREMENTS AND REWARDS

God is looking for vessels and His requirements include: faithfulness (Lk.19:17; 1 Cor.4:2; Jer.5:1); availability (Ezek.22:30; Isa.6:8); teachability (Jn.14:23; Matt.10:24); obedience to God’s word (2Tim.2:21; Prov.13:13) and being strong in Christ (Jn.14:12; 15:16).

In addition, God wants us to purge ourselves of every contamination of the body and soul (2Tim.2:21), lay aside weights (Heb.12:1), die to self (Jn.12:24-26), not to look for fame and its associated fanfare, but to be completely yielded to Him. God can discern every thought and motive behind every action (Heb.4:13; Ps.33:13-15).

Let us choose to serve Him with all sincerity of heart and press on to the mark of His high calling in Christ (Phil.3:12-14). God rewards everything done in His name, whether in secret or in the open (Isa.45:19; Ps.58:11; Heb.11:6; Rev.22:12).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should identify how God rewards faithful vessels on earth.

CONCLUSION: You are the next vessel to be used by God. Stop resisting Him.

QUESTIONS:

Mention some of those God used in the past despite their shortcomings.

What does God require of a man He will use?

FURTHER READINGS:

Monday: Deuteronomy 28:1 (KJV);

1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:

THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 5)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we learnt that it is better to hearken

to the voice of God rather than the voice of men and that when

God says no, nobody can say yes because He has the final

say.

Today, as we continue in our study, may the Holy Spirit teach

us and give us the heart of understanding in Jesus Name.

1. IT IS BETTER NOT TO FALL THAN TO RISE

It is a good thing to rise when you fall, but it is even better not to

fall at all than to make an attempt to rise.

I Sam.15:25-27, Ps.37:24, 145:14, Mic.7:8, Eccl.4:10,

Heb.10:31, 6:6, Lk.10:18, Isa.14:12, Acts 1:18-20, I Cor.

10:12, 2Pet.1:10

2. NO ONE IS INDISPENSABLE

Every man has his own unique nature and

responsibility to God. However, God can still do without a person

if He wishes, as no one is indispensable to God.

I Sam. 15:28, Gen. 1:31, Ps. 139:14, I Pet. 2:9, Rom. 8:28, Jn.

15:16, Acts 26:16-18, I Thes. 2:11-12, Jn.15:1-2, Mt. 3:8-10,

Rev. 3:15-16.

TOPIC: Dynamics Of Grace (2)

MEMORY VERSE: “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:” – Hebrews 12:28 (NKJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 8:6-9 (KJV)

6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

8 I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to the description of ‘Grace’ given in the previous lesson, Grace can also be referred to as the divine influence in a human heart that reflects on the outside. It produces favour, beauty, goodwill, loveliness, and ability. It increases as one grows in the knowledge of God’s word (2 Pet.3:18). We shall therefore consider the various dimensions of grace mentioned in the Bible as well as some actions that can be taken with or against grace.

LESSON OUTLINES:

DIMENSIONS OF GRACE

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH/AGAINST GRACE

1. DIMENSIONS OF GRACE

The Bible talks about grace in various dimensions. For instance, we have common grace (Ps.145:9; Matt.5:45), saving grace (Eph.2:4-9; Tit.2:11), abundant grace (2 Cor.4:15), sanctifying grace (Tit.2:12; 1 Jn.2:15-16), sustaining grace (Rom.6:14; Jude: 1:24-25), supernatural/enabling grace (Phil.4:13; Lk.1:37), service (gifting) grace (Rom.12:6; Eph.4:7), sufficient grace (2 Cor.9:8; 1 Pet.5:10), victorious grace (1 Sam.17:36-37), sacrificial giving grace (Gen.22:9-10; 2 Cor.12:15), great grace (Acts 4:33), eternal grace (1 Cor.9:27), etc.

The key to access and operate at any of these levels or dimensions of grace lies in the degree of one’s connection with Christ from whom all grace originates and the desire to grow in Him (Jn.15:5; Phil.4:13; 2 Pet.3:18).

2. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH/AGAINST GRACE

There are lots of benefits that a believer can derive from grace apart from salvation. Grace can impart great blessings (Acts.4:23; Ps.84:11). It also imparts faith (Acts.18:27). In addition, it makes one God’s elect (Rom.11:5-6), gives boldness (1Cor.15:10), calls believers to the ministry (Gal.1:15), helps render acceptable service (Heb.12:28), gives seasoning to speech (Col.4:6), gives strength (2Tim.2:1), helps in time of need (Heb.4:16) and can bring hope (2Thess.2:16), among others.

However, it is possible to do the following against grace:

Receive grace in vain (2Cor.6:1).

Frustrate grace in one’s life (Gal.2:21).

Fall from grace (Gal.1:6-8; 5:4).

Fail of the grace of God (Heb.12:15).

Turn grace into lasciviousness (Jude 4).

Continue in sin in spite of grace (Rom.6:1).

Reject grace through pride (Jam.4:6).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What should you do and not do to grace?

CONCLUSION: Every believer must aspire to grow in grace (2 Pet.3:18). It is a dangerous thing to abuse grace despite its benefits.

QUESTIONS:

State the dimensions of Grace known to you.

What can you do with/against grace?

FURTHER READING:

Monday: 1 Peter 5:5-6 (KJV)

5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Tuesday: Proverbs 3:34 (KJV)

34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

Wednesday: Proverbs 11:16 (KJV)

A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.

Thursday: Luke 9:16 (KJV)

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

Friday: Luke 22:19 (KJV)

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Saturday: John 1:17 (KJV)

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Sunday: 1 Corinthians 15:10 (KJV)

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention any two dimensions of grace and state how they have worked for you (2×5=10 marks).

TOPIC: The Earthen Vessels

MEMORY VERSE: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 2:20-21 (KJV)

20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: God can make something out of nothing and will never create anything without a purpose. He chose a small portion of the dust to form man and His breath in the nostril of man made the difference, making man a living soul (Gen.2:7). God has a purpose for all souls He created including all the resources He puts into our hands more so because no one can have anything except it is given from above. God expects the resources given to us to flow through us to benefit others and this forms the differences between a container and a vessel.

LESSON OUTLINES:

TREASURES IN DUST

CONTAINERS OR VESSELS

1. TREASURES IN DUST

Dust had no serious relevance to man until God touched, made and breathed into it, the breath of life (Gen.2:7). He deposited part of Himself – His Spirit – into the dust and deposited a treasure in it (Job 32:8). That small portion of dust began to move on the larger portion with authority from God (Gen.1:28). When the master, in the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30, was ‘travelling to a far country,’ he gave talents to his servants according to their pre-determined abilities. All the servants got something and none was empty. All of us, therefore, have resources deposited inside of us and no one is empty (2Cor.4:7). Our Master, Jesus Christ, has deposited great treasures into us (Eph.4:7-8) and expects us to use the resources and make profits so that He will bless us when He comes back (1 Cor.12:7; Rev.22:12). What you do with the resources is a matter of choice; you could be a container or a vessel.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The teacher should ask each student to identify what talents or gifts or abilities they have and how they use the gift for God’s glory.

2. CONTAINERS OR VESSELS

God expects us to be vessels and not containers. What then makes a container different from a vessel?

A container receives and retains whereas a vessel transports (transmits). Abraham received Isaac and was willing to release him (Gen.22:15-18).

A container is a reservoir but a vessel is a channel (Lk.12:16-21; Gen.12:1-3).

A container is basically static like a pond but a vessel is dynamic (Acts8:5-6, 26-40).

A container gives only when compelled but a vessel is always giving (Eccl.11:2-6).

A container is limited in reception but a vessel is unlimited because it is constantly flowing (Jn.20:21-22; Prov.11:24).

A container abides alone whereas a vessel touches several others (Jn.12:24; Acts 10:38; Jn. 7:37-39).

A container could become a vessel if the container is willing. If a wheel is attached to a container and pulled, it becomes a vessel. A good example is in Elisha who forsook his ambition, attached himself to Elijah and kept moving (1Kgs.19:19-21; 2Kgs.2:1-22).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The teacher should lead the students to pray that they will be vessels to honour and not containers.

CONCLUSION

Beware; a vessel could equally become a container. Let the one who thinks he stands take heed lest he falls (1Cor.10:12).

QUESTIONS:

Give some examples of situations when God brought out something from nothing

What are the differences between a container and a vessel?

FURTHER READINGS:

Monday: John 12:24 (KJV)

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

Tuesday: Luke 19:30 (KJV)

30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.

Wednesday: Acts 9:36 (KJV)

36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.

Thursday: Acts 4:13 (KJV)

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

Friday: Luke 6:17 (KJV)

17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

Saturday: Matthew 26:58 (KJV)

58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.

Sunday: Romans 8:25 (KJV)

25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five (5) biblical characters, with scriptural reference each, who remained vessels in God’s hand. (2×5=10 Marks).

THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 4)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we discovered that the sacrifice

offered in disobedience and unrighteousness is vain and that

rebellion is a terrible sin against God.

Today, as we continue in our studies, may the Lord teach us

and shower His blessings upon us in Jesus Name.

1. WHAT MEN SAY OR WHAT GOD SAYS

Men of the world around you i.e. from your family, office,

neighbourhood, church e.t.c have a lot to say about you and the

law of your God. It is better to hearken to the voice of God rather

than those of men, as men's voice could be misleading and

confusing.

I Sam. 15:24, I Cor. 14:10, I Pet. 1:24-25, Ps. 27:1, Ps. 118:6, Isa.

51:12-13, Prov. 29:25, Jn. 17:14-17, I Jn. 2:15-17, Exo. 23:2,

Acts 4:18-19, Jer. 26:13.

2. WHEN GOD SAYS NO, WHO CAN SAY YES

Our God has the final say. Whenever He says no, no one can say

yes and when He says yes, no one can say no.

However, before God's final “no”, He gives men enough

opportunity for repentance and reconciliation because He is

plenteous in mercy.

I Sam. 15:23, Isa. 46:9-11, Ps. 62:11, Isa. 40:27-29, 14:27, Ps.

103:8, 2 Cor. 1:3-4, 2 Pet. 3:9, I Sam. 15:25, Matt. 27:3, Heb. 3:7-

8, Isa. 1:18.

TOPIC: Dynamics Of Grace (1)

MEMORY VERSE: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,” Titus 2:11 (NKJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 2:4-10 (KJV)

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

INTRODUCTION: The word translated ‘Grace’ in Hebrew is ‘chen’ which means to bend or stoop in kindness to another as a superior to an inferior (Gen.6:8). The Greek word for Grace is “charis” which connotes something beyond the ordinary course of what can be expected and therefore commendable (1Cor.15:10). When used in reference to God, it is the benevolent action of Him stooping down to us in kindness to reach us in our needs and convey upon us a benefit. His grace has been termed ‘unmerited favour’ but it is more than an attitude of favour or mercy.

LESSON OUTLINES:

UNDERSTANDING GRACE

HOW TO RECEIVE GRACE

1. UNDERSTANDING GRACE

‘Grace’ connotes many things. It is often described as God’s favour towards the unworthy or His benevolence on the undeserving (Rom.5:8-10) translated into action that releases the enabling power into our lives (1Cor.15:10). Grace signifies the gift bestowed upon man for salvation (Eph.2:8; Tit.2:11) and for service (Eph.3:7-8; 4:7). It is also a virtue to be manifested (2Cor.8:7) and a benediction to be enjoyed by believers in Christ (Eph.6:24).

Grace helps in times of need (Phil.4:19; Heb.4:16) and enables us to do exploits (Daniel 11:32, Phil.4:13).

The covenant of grace differs considerably from Old Testament covenants under the law. While the Law blessed ‘the good’, grace saves ‘the bad.’ The law accuses and convicts, ‘Grace’ cancels bonds and relieves the debtor (Rom.6:14).

Paul describes ‘Grace’ as the appearance of the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards man (Tit.2:11; 3:4). God shows both Mercy and Grace but they are not exactly the same. Mercy withholds a punishment we deserve; grace gives a blessing we do not deserve.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss the relationship among “Law” “Grace” and “Mercy.”

2. HOW TO RECEIVE GRACE

Basically, the grace of God can be received through the following ways but not limited to these:

By accepting God’s love towards all men (Jn.3:16; Rom.5:8).

By believing in the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom.10:9-10) through God’s mercy and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit (1Tim.1:13; Heb.4:16; Matt.9:13).

By exercising our faith, no matter how little at all times (Matt.17:20; Rom.1:17).

By being humble before God (Jam.4:6; 1Pet.5:5).

By loving the Lord Jesus with all of our hearts (Eph.6:24).

Through sufferings and trials arranged for us by God (Rom.8:28; 1Pet.5:10; 2Cor.12:9).

Through the prophetic words of prayer contained in the Bible or spoken to us by our spiritual heads and fellow believers in Christ (Ps.107:20; Acts 20:32; 2Tim.4:22; 1Thess.1:1).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss the benefits of grace upon the believers.

CONCLUSION: Grace is the spring and source of all benefits received from God (Rom.11:6). God’s grace should not be taken for granted (Rom.6:1-2; Gal.2:21).

TOPIC: Theology Of Rest

MEMORY VERSE: “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” – Genesis 2:2 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Exodus 20:8-11 (KJV)

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Rest is the cessation of work or movement in order to relax or recover strength. It can also be referred to as peace, ease or refreshment. To relax means to become less tense, anxious or firm; to relieve stress; to have a milder manner. God created for six days and then He rested, not because He was tired but to set the standard for mankind to follow (Genesis 2:2-3; Exodus 20:10).

LESSON OUTLINES

WHY REST?

HOW DO WE REST?

1. WHY REST?

God set the example of rest in Genesis 2:2-3 when He ceased from creating. Rest is a divine command (Exodus 20:10) as well as a gift from God to man (Mark 2:27). Though Jesus did not take a vacation from His ministry, He did take times off to refresh and also ensured His disciples did the same (Mark 6:31; John 18:1-2). In resting, we declare our dependence on God and exercise our faith in His provision (Matthew 6:25). Rest brings about recuperation from fatigue (Luke 8:23). Rest also serves as a relief from the anxiety of the mind and spirit (Psalm 55:22). God desires rest for His people (Exodus 33:14; Job 11:18).

2. HOW DO WE REST?

In order to rest, we must first and foremost trust that God will take care of things for us (1Peter 5:7). Obedience will bring the rest that God so desires for us (Hebrews 3:7-8). Without being complacent, we must learn to relax our grip on many things in life that stress us negatively e.g. career, bills, families, etc. and give them over to God in faith (Proverbs 3:5-6). We should take time to rest properly after a good day’s job (Ecclesiastes 5:12a). At least, a believer should have a day off to rest or relax in a week (Exodus 20:10). Going on vacation or visiting places for recreation is biblical and should be part of our schedule (John 18:1-2).

The command to rest is not an excuse to be lazy. You have to work for ‘six days’ to get to the ‘Sabbath.’

CONCLUSION

For the Christian, the ultimate rest is found in Christ. He invites all who are weary and burdened to come to him and cast their cares on Him (Matthew 11:28; 1Peter 5:7).

QUESTION

Why do we need rest?

Mention four (4) ways by which we can rest.

FURTHER READINGS:

Monday: Exodus 20:10 (KJV)

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Tuesday: Mark 2:27 (KJV)

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

Wednesday: Genesis 2:2-3 (KJV)

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Thursday: Philippians 4:4-6 (KJV)

4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. 5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Friday: Exodus 33:14 (KJV)

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

Saturday: Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Sunday: Matthew 6:25 (KJV)

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

ASSIGNMENT: Do you take time to rest? Share your rest routine (No Mark).
