THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 2)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we discovered that the Master (our

Lord Jesus Christ) never makes mistakes in the choice of His

chosen vessel and that He is the one who decides the specific

use of the vessel.

Today, as we continue in our studies, may the Lord bless us richly

through His word in Jesus Name.

1. NO ONE CAN BE WISER THAN GOD

Our God is the All-knowing, All powerful and the All-wise. His ways

are perfect.

However, His ways often appear foolish in the sight of man.

Nevertheless, no one can be wiser than his maker.

I Sam. 15:3, Exo. 17:8-13, I Sam. 15:18-23, I Tim. 1:17, Ps. 147:5,

Rom. 1:21-22, I Cor. 1:25, Isa. 5:21, Prov. 3:5, Prov. 3:7

2. PARTIAL OBEDIENCE IS DANGEROUS

Partial or incomplete obedience is a snare of the devil unto

destruction. It could even be more dangerous than total

disobedience.

I Sam. 15:4-9, Prov. 22:5, Jn. 1:2-3, 15:17, Acts5:1-5, Matt. 21:28-

TOPIC: Christian Social Responsibility

MEMORY VERSE: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: Leviticus 19:9-10 (KJV)

9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.

10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the Lord your God.

INTRODUCTION: God’s relationship with man is characterised by His holiness, justice, love, and mercy among others. Our relationships with one another and society have to be patterned according to the character of God (Matthew 22:36-39). Therefore, it is our responsibility as God’s people to care for those around us (1 John. 3:10). The attempt of the church to show love and alleviate the suffering of the people, especially in her immediate environment/community is termed Christian Social Responsibility.

LESSON OUTLINES:

MEANING AND BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

BENEFITS OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

1. MEANING AND BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

Christian Social Responsibility (CSR) is a faith-based obligation to meet societal needs through the demonstration of love that positively impacts communities and individuals. CSR has its roots in Christianity and the Church is meant to be an example for the world to follow (Matt.5:16). It is an initiative for community relations and to partner with the government in achieving the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CSR could be in the areas of provision of basic social amenities, Healthcare delivery/facilities, Education, Media, Business support, Art/Entertainment, Governance, Sports, etc. It involves strategically assessing societal challenges and developing appropriate structured programmes to cater for them.

CSR is a core part of the ministry of the Church. It is not a 21st-century concept; it has its origin in the Bible. For instance, Leviticus 19:9-10 and 23:22 instruct us to always make provisions for the needy out of our income. In Matthew 14:15-21, Jesus demonstrated the need for CSR when He fed five thousand men (besides women and children). Also, the early Christians distributed their wealth to take care of those in need (Acts 2:44-45).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What are the differences between Corporate Social Responsibility and Christian Social Responsibility?

2. BENEFITS OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The benefits of Christian Social Responsibility to the Church and the world are numerous:

It enables people to actually see and know the meaning of the love of God (1Jn. 3:16-18).

It meets the needs of the less privileged in society (Ps.28:7).

It promotes evangelism and entrenches the church of God in the hearts and minds of the people we come across (Matt.5:16).

It embraces responsibility for sustainable actions and encourages a positive impact on the environment (Mk.12:33).

It complements the government’s efforts in improving and sustaining the standard of living for people in their immediate community (Jam.2:14-16).

It will enable the church to build a good relationship with the community (Gal.6:10).

It helps the believer to represent Jesus physically in their community (Prov.13:17; 2Cor.5:20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What are the disadvantages of not engaging in Christian Social Responsibility on regular basis?

CONCLUSION: Christian Social Responsibility is not to seek commendation from men but to show the love of Christ and be a blessing to our community.

QUESTIONS

How can believers impact their immediate environment?

Mention four benefits of CSR to the church and the world at large.

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Matthew 6:1-4 (KJV); 1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Tuesday: Deuteronomy 24:19 (KJV); 19 When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.

Wednesday: 1 John 4:8 (KJV); He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Thursday: 1 Corinthians 14:25 (KJV); And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Friday: Mark 16:17 (KJV); And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Saturday: 1 Corinthians 14:25 (KJV); 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Sunday: John 15:8 (KJV); Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

ASSIGNMENT

Clearly state five areas your Church can engage in Christian Social Responsibility to meet the needs of the people in your immediate community (No mark).

TOPIC: Child Abuse

MEMORY VERSE: “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” – Matthew 18:6 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Mark 10:13-16 (KJV)

13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, a child is “a young person especially between infancy and youth”. Child abuse is any maltreatments of a child which causes him/her harm. Such action can also take the form of a child neglect or failure to protect a child from danger especially by a parent or other caregivers. The Bible tells us that whosoever harms a child is asking for God’s anger (Mark 9:42)

LESSON OUTLINES

FORMS OF CHILD ABUSE

SIGNS AND PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE

FORMS OF CHILD ABUSE

Children are precious to God and must be well taken care of (Psalm 127:3). Basically, child abuse can be physical, sexual or emotional.

PHYSICAL ABUSE: can be the excessive beating of a child (especially one that leaves him/her with Marks), throwing objects, poisoning, child labour (trafficking, Hawking), neglecting to give the child basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter, education, healthcare, etc. It also includes the use of drug, alcohol or any substance that will cause the child distress (1Kings 3:19; 25-26; Mark 9:42).

SEXUAL ABUSE: This is when any person engages a child in any sexual activities such as fondling a child’s sexual organs, engaging the child in any immoral activity eg pornography, rape, defilement of the child, etc. (2Samuel 13:10-15)

EMOTIONAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE: includes teasing, bullying, threatening, verbal abuse (such as causing belittling, constantly finding fault), etc (1Samuel 17:26-28; Colossians 3:21).

2. SIGNS AND PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE

These are some of the signs that a child is being abused: aggressive behaviour, low self-esteem, sleeping difficulties, unexplained bruises, burns or swellings, lack of concentration and criminal inclinations. Child abuse may eventually leads to deformation or death.

PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE MAY TAKE THE FOLLOWING FORMS:

Early education, identification and intervention.

Break The silence report any abuse.

Train a child in a godly ways (Proverbs 22:6)

It is not every wrong that should be a melt with capital punishment

CONCLUSION

Child abuse is a menace that must be dealt with holistically and in the fear of God.

QUESTION:

Mention three (3) forms of child abuse.

State at least two (2) ways of preventing child abuse.

THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 1)

Text: 1 Samuel 15

INTRODUCTION:

Avessel is a below receptacle especially for liquid. It is a household

ware or equipment designed for essentially household uses.

There are various kinds of vessels in the house e.g. vessel of

gold, silver, wood, earth; vessel unto honour or dishonor. Il Tim.

2:20

However, a vessel may be good, useful and yet be rejected by the master

of the house. May the good Lord never reject us in Jesus Name.

1. THE MASTER NEVER MAKES MISTAKE IN CHOOSING A

VESSEL

Since the master of the house is the owner of the vessel, and since he

knows the strength and usefulness of every vessel, he cannot make

mistake in the choice of the one to use. The choice of God for us is not

mistake, as He never makes mistake.

I Sam. 15:1-2, 9:15-17, Num. 23:19, Rom. 3:4, Jam. 1:17-18, Jn.

1:12-13, Ps. 103: 14, Matt. 25:15, Act 9:11-15.

2. THE MASTER DECIDES THE SPECIFIC USE OF THE VESSEL

Both the choice and use of the vessel are the prerogative of the

master and not of the vessel itself. After God has chosen us, He gave

us specific assignments.

I Sam. 15:3, Jn. 15:16, Matt. 28:19-20, Isa. 64:8, Rom. 9:20-21,

8:28-30, ll Tim. 1:9, I Thess. 2:12, Heb. 11:8, Jn. 6:67-70

CONCLUSION

As a chosen vessel, are you doing the will of the master who has

chosen you. The continuity of the master's use of your vessel

depends on you.

TOPIC: Financial Intelligence

MEMORY VERSE: “The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.” – Proverbs 14:8 (KJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 19:12-26 (KJV)

12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.

13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.

17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.

19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:

21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:

23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)

26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

INTRODUCTION: Simply put, financial intelligence is about being financially wise. It is the knowledge and skills gained from understanding finance and accounting principles in the business world and how money is being used (Prov.18:15). To be highly successful, extra efforts, skills, intelligence, and God’s leading will be needed. It is not only organisations and business owners that need financial intelligence; it is also needed for personal finance.

LESSON OUTLINES:

PERSONAL FINANCE

BE FINANCIALLY INTELLIGENT

1. PERSONAL FINANCE

Personal finance is the term that covers planning (Proverbs 21:5; 30:25) and managing personal financial activities such as revenue generation, expenditures, budgeting, savings, investments, and other financial-related actions (Matthew 25:20). As an individual, your personal finance is a reflection of the level of your financial intelligence that is, your ability to make smart decisions, plan properly, especially in the aspect of finance, and live a good life (Proverbs 10:4). Your net worth and what you are able to do with your money is considered a success (Matthew 25:22) and not necessarily so much cash at your disposal. A personal financial statement (Assets-Liabilities) shows the net worth of an individual. For example, if all assets in possession are sold and all debts paid, and the liabilities are greater than the assets, the financial statement indicates a negative net worth. But, if the individual has more assets than liabilities, it is positive net worth.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Can you say so many people in your locality are financially intelligent? If No/Yes: How and Why?

NOTE: You may NOT refer to specific names.

2. BE FINANCIALLY INTELLIGENT

For us to be financially intelligent, we need to do the following:

Develop a personal success drive and be intentional about the well-being of your finance (1Kgs.11:28).

Seek knowledge and be informed (Prov.1:5): Invest in yourself (Prov.19:20), read (2Tim.4:13), make research (Acts 17:11), ask questions, and open your ears and eyes to the happenings around you.

Practice what you learn and use the knowledge gained to execute the purpose for which it was acquired (Prov.6:6; 10:4).

Keep track of your spending: identify where you need to make amends and where you need to intensify efforts (Prov.16:21a).

Have proper and detailed records of your income and expenditure (2Chr.34:16-18).

Surround yourself with the right people who share the same opinion (Prov.13:20; 27:17).

Pray for divine wisdom and direction on what and when to invest your resources (Jam.1:5; Isa.30:21).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The Teacher should ask students to comment on why they think each of the seven items so identified above is necessary to make a person financially intelligent?

CONCLUSION: Financial intelligence is needed in order to stay on top of your financial game because hardly would you find a financially intelligent person who is not successful.

QUESTIONS

What is personal finance?

Mention four things believers can do to be financially intelligent.

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Proverbs 19:15 (KJV); Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

Tuesday: Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJV); But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Wednesday: Luke 12:15 (KJV); And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Thursday: Philippians 4:13 (KJV); I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Friday: Luke 16:11-12 (KJV); 11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?

Saturday: John 15:5 (KJV); I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Sunday: Proverbs 12:24 (KJV); The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

TOPIC: Divorce Is Costly

MEMORY VERSE: “And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.” – Malachi 2:15 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Malachi 2:13-16 (NLT)

13 Here is another thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, weeping and groaning because he pays no attention to your offerings and doesn’t accept them with pleasure. 14 You cry out, “Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! Because the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows.

15 Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his.[a] And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth. 16 “For I hate divorce!”[b] says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,[c]” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

Malachi 2:13-16 (King James Version)

13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.

14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.

15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Anyone considering divorce must have experienced months or years of struggle with their spouse. They are familiar with emotional distance, insecurity, fear, depression, anger, and perhaps betrayal. Life has become so difficult that divorce seems like the only path toward peace and happiness. Our High Priest empathises with believers in such state (Hebrews 4:15). However, God clearly explains His reasons for esteeming marriage so highly. He says it was He who “made them one” (Malachi 2:15). Marriage was God’s idea and any deviation from His design is detestable to Him. Marriage is not just a contract; it is a covenant. This is why God hates divorce and the consequences can be grievous.

LESSON OUTLINES:

GOD HATES DIVORCE

DIVORCE HAS GRAVE CONSEQUENCES

1. GOD HATES DIVORCE

Marriage is a picture of the covenant God has with His people (1Cor.6:17) and He wants us to understand how serious it is. When a husband or wife chooses to violate the covenant of marriage, it mars and makes a mockery of the God-created concept of covenant relationship. (Rev.19:7-9; 2 Cor.11:2). God never intended divorce to be a part of human experience and it grieves Him when we harden our hearts and break a covenant that He created (Matt.19:4-8).

Malachi 2:15 gives us another reason God hates divorce. He says He is “seeking godly offspring.” God’s design for the family was that one man and one woman commit themselves to each other for life and rear children that will understand the concept of covenant as well. Children reared in a healthy, two-parent home have a far greater likelihood of establishing successful marriages themselves.

2. DIVORCE HAS GRAVE CONSEQUENCES

There is a direct correlation between the way a man treats his wife and the effectiveness of his prayers. God does not listen to the pleas for blessing from those who have broken the covenant of marriage (I Pet 3:7).

Divorce is associated with many negative outcomes. Here are some;

Divorce is a death of a union, and therefore the death of a dream, a promise and a family unit. Everyone involved -even a perpetrator- will feel grief and loss during a divorce. If there are children involved, they will experience severe grief over the loss of being with both parents together and living under the same roof.

Divorce marks a pivotal moment in a person’s life, especially for children; life as they know it changes forever and they become different versions of themselves, adapting to new routines and new versions of their parents (who have also changed).

Children of divorced parents are more likely to experience poverty, educational failure, early and risky sexual activities, non-marital childbirth, early marriage, cohabitation, marital discord and divorce.

Following a divorce, parents and children often experience emotional and psychological problems, that can last for years, even for the rest of their lives. Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, fear of abandonment, distrust, insecurity, lack of intimacy, confusion over sexuality and/or gender, guilt, faithlessness, loneliness, bitterness, and rebellion manifest themselves in children who have lived through divorce of their parents.

Divorce matters can lead to a poor sense of judgment especially on marital issues, increase in crime, drug/alcohol addiction and even suicide attempt.

The productivity of divorcees/divorced men may reduce at work and in their service to God.

There is a chance of another divorce. Research shows that about 60% of divorcees/divorced men who remarry will divorce again. Realistically, most people carry the unresolved issues from their last failed marriage into the next marriage.

CONCLUSION: If God hates divorce, believers should do everything possible, including consulting with the Author of marriage – God, to make the marriage work.

QUESTIONS:

Why does God hate divorce?

What are the consequences of divorce?

FURTHER READINGS:

MONDAY: Matthew 19:6,8 (KJV); 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

TUESDAY: Mark 10:24 (KJV); And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

WEDNESDAY: 1 Corinthians 10:22 (KJV); Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

THURSDAY: Ephesians 5:22-31 (KJV); 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

FRIDAY: Colossians 3:18-19 (KJV); 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

SATURDAY: Revelation 19:9 (KJV); And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

SUNDAY: Matthew 5:32 (KJV); But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

IT IS TIME TO SHINE (par t 2)

Text: Matthew 5:13-16

INTRODUCTION

If light refuses to shine, it ceases to carry out the original purpose

for which it is meant. No wonder Jesus Christ said “if salt looses

its saltness or savour, it is good for nothing but to be trampled

under the foot of men. As well if light cannot shine again, it

becomes irrelevant. May your light not become irrelevant and

useless in Jesus name. Matt. 6:23.

A. BENEFITS OF SHINING

i. Your life affects others regularly as you keep shining. Salt affects

anything it comes in contact with, so also the life of every child of

God ought to affect the people around him or her.

ii. You become a terror to the kingdom of darkness. Darkness is

always threatened in the presence of light. David, Daniel and

Paul are examples of people that troubled hell.

iii. Boldness becomes a lifestyle. Light is not afraid of darkness.

Fear is associated with darkness.

Col. 4:5-6, Isa. 60:3, Phil. 2:15, Eph. 5:8-14, Prov. 28:1,

Acts 4:13, Acts 19:8, II Tim. 1:7.

B. DANGERS OF NOT SHINING

I. BACKSLIDING Peter could not openly profess Jesus as His

Lord because he was afar. Demas forsook the Lord because of

the things of the world.

II. SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL DEATH- Saul was an anointed

king, but because of disobedience to God, his light became

darkness. He became a man who consulted witches coven that

he condemned at the beginning of his reign. Samson is also

another example. He died spiritually when God left him before his

physical death.

Matt. 26:58, 69-74, 2 Tim. 4:10, I Sam. 28:3, 6-7, Judges 16:20-

30.

TOPIC: Christianity And Wealth

MEMORY VERSE: “Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.” – 1 Chronicles 29:12 (KJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 12:15-21 (KJV)

15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

INTRODUCTION: As stated in the previous lesson, ‘wealth’ is the abundance of valuable possessions or money. When we have wealth, we have more than we need to sustain a normal life. The Bible contains several examples of people blessed by God with great wealth; Abraham (Genesis 13:2), Jacob (Genesis 30:43), Solomon (1 Kings. 10:23), Joanna (Luk.8:3), and Joseph of Arimathea (Matthew 27:57) among others. We shall consider what the Bible says about wealth and what should be believers’ disposition towards it.

LESSON OUTLINES:

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION

1. BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

Christians’ view of wealth should be derived from the Scriptures. This is because wealth and honour come from God (1Chr.29:12). God often blesses His children with wealth when they please Him (Deut.28:1-5). The Bible establishes the fact that wealth and riches shall be in the house of the man that fears God (Ps.112:1-3); Money answers all things (Eccl.10:19); To enjoy one’s wealth is a gift from God (Eccl.5:19); Money is a defence (Eccl.7:12) and it makes many friends (Prov.19:4).

However, the Bible also contains several warnings about wealth, among which is the fact that the love of money is the root of all evil (1Tim.6:10); riches should not be trusted (Prov.23:5; Lk.12:15); wealth gotten through the wrong means shall diminish (Prov.13:11); all men will die and leave their wealth to others (Ps.49:10); those who pursue wealth at the expense of other core values of life will never be satisfied (Eccl.5:10a).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: How should believers see or handle wealth?

2. BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION

Christians should note that wealth has never been an accurate barometer of a person’s standing with God. Some righteous people are poor (Lk.16:20-23) while some wicked people are rich (Ps.73:3,12). How then should believers handle wealth? While it is not a sin for wealthy believers to enjoy their riches (Eccl.5:19; 3Jn.2), they should also see wealth as an investment entrusted to them by God (1Chr.29:12). This wealth must be used to enhance good and pursue God’s purposes.

Wealthy believers can initiate charities and scholarship programmes, promote care for orphans, widows, and the less privileged (1Jn.3:17-18; Jam.1:27), and be instrumental in advancing God’s kingdom (Lk.8:3; Rom.16:3). It is very important that believers prove themselves as faithful stewards by channeling their wealth to godly legacies (1 Cor.4:2; Matt.6:19-20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What are the wrong ways of handling wealth?

CONCLUSION: In a bid to be wealthy, believers should always note that their first care should be for God’s kingdom and His righteousness (Matt.6:33).

QUESTIONS:

Mention three things the Bible says about wealth.

How should believers handle wealth?

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Mark 8:36 (KJV); 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Tuesday: Matthew 6:19-24 (KJV); 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Wednesday: Luke 12:31 (KJV); 31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Thursday: Romans 4:4 (KJV); 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

Friday: Isaiah 1:16-17 (KJV); 16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Saturday: 1 John 5:18 (KJV); 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

Sunday: Matthew 16:26 (KJV); 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five ways that would guide a believer’s outlook on wealth? (2×5=10 Marks).

4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: God, invented marriage for companionship, sexual intimacy, procreation and invariably fulfillment (Genesis 2:18, 21-24). However, what becomes of marriage depends primarily on the understanding of the couple on what marriage should be and the factors that positively or negatively influence such understanding (Proverbs 24:3-4). How a couple manage such influence(s) determines whether or not there will be happiness, peace, progress etc. We shall, therefore, address some of this marriage influencers in this lesson.

LESSON OUTLINES

NEGATIVE INFLUENCERS

POSITIVE INFLUENCERS

1. NEGATIVE INFLUENCERS

Friends in toxic relationship: Couples must protect their marriage from failure by avoiding destructive relationship patterns sponsored by third parties whose marriages seem not to be working (1 Corinthians 15:33; Psalm 1:1).

Inordinate pursuit of money or career: Money is needed to run the affairs of the home but when it is being pursued at the expense of the marriage, it may affect the togetherness of the couple (1 Timothy 6:10).

Character defects: One of the factors that make marriage beautiful is changed. However, when spouses refuse to admit the need for a change in a defective lifestyle, such marriage suffer needless tensions (Matthew 7:3).

Close relationship with ex-lovers opposite sex: Failure to redefine and detach fully from previous or present intimate relationship with the opposite sex can trigger unforeseen sexual immorality (Proverbs 5:3, 15,20).

Excessive jealousy: This happens when a partner is over possessive. This is dangerous and can lead to destructive behaviours (Proverbs 6:34).

Addictions: Habits like gambling, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, and the like, are some moral vices that can draw the heart of either of the partners away from the marriage.

2. POSITIVE INFLUENCERS

Trust and understanding (1John 4:18; 1Peter 3:7).

Selflessness and mutual support (Galatians 6:2; Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

Praying together and keeping Christ at the centre of the relationship (Matthew 18:19; Psalm 127:1).

Building a new home and family culture together (Genesis 2:24).

Spending quality time together (Proverbs 31:28).

IT IS TIME TO SHINE Par t 1 (Co nt .)

HOW DO YOU SHINE?

1. Keep connected to your source of supply. Every light

that shines has a source. If light is cut off from the source, no

matter the voltage it carries, it cannot shine.

2. Constantly doing good works. Dorcas is a good example of

someone full of good works. Though, she died, her works

spoke on her behalf and she was raised back to life. Paul kept

on emphasizing on good works.

3. Keep renewing your lamp. Daily looking at yourself in the

mirror of the word of God helps you to wake up.

continuously, sin will be far from you. You will definitely want to

live an exemplary life for your converts as Paul said in

2 Cor. 4:6, I Cor. 11:1.

5. Avoid fellowship with darkness. Remember the story of Ahab

who married a daughter of a Baal worshiper. I Kings 16:31-

TOPIC: The Power To Get Wealth

MEMORY VERSE: “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” – Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 26:1-4; 12-14 (KJV)

Genesis 26:1-4;

1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

Genesis 26:12-14;

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.

13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.

INTRODUCTION: Wealth is the abundance of valuable possessions or money. The Power to get wealth refers to both divine and physical enablement to prosper. When we have wealth, we have more than we need to sustain a normal life. To get wealth, knowledge, as well as its right application is important. Hence, this study will examine some fundamental truths about wealth and principles of wealth creation.

LESSON OUTLINES:

SOME FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS ABOUT WEALTH

PRINCIPLES OF WEALTH CREATION

1. SOME FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS ABOUT WEALTH

Christians should note that God wants us to prosper (Ps.35:27; 3Jn.2) because He desires for us to have an abundant life (Jn.10:10b), to provide financial resources for kingdom advancement (Lk.8:3), and to be able to show practical love to humanity (Prov.11:11a).

Christians are not called to just survive nor are they to be unduly extravagant (3 Jn.2; Phil.4:5). As Christians, we should aspire to get wealth and bear in mind that all blessings come from God and belong to Him (Jam.1:17). Also, all blessings come from God through men to men (Lk.6:38) – this is why we must keep healthy relationships. Being wealthy in God’s kingdom is a trust from God, we are only custodians (Deut.8:17-18).

It is pertinent to know that prosperity goes beyond financial blessings (Eph.1:3; 3Jn.2). Therefore, we must strive to achieve all levels of prosperity which include; spiritual, mental, bodily, financial, and relational prosperity (positive relationship with family, friends, and destiny helpers).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What is the difference and similarity between wealth and prosperity?

2. PRINCIPLES OF WEALTH CREATION

The principles of wealth creation can be broadly categorised under two divisions: Spiritual principles and Economic principles. To get wealth in the kingdom way, some of the necessary principles include:

The principle of absolute surrender (Job 22:21-26; Ps.112:1-3).

The principle of tithing and first fruit (Lev.27:30; Mal. 3:8-12; Prov.3:9-10).

The principle of giving (Lk.6:38; 2 Cor.9:6-7).

The principle of divine wisdom, direction, and strategies (Jam. 1:5; Gen.26:1-2, 12-13; 30:37-43).

In addition to the above, economic principles for wealth creation may include:

Principle of mental transformation (Prov.23:7a): the reality captured in your heart is what comes to manifestation. Imagine great things because your mind is an extraordinary fertile garden (Prov.4:23; Phil.4:8).

The principles of value: Your value is a measure of your skills, gifts, or abilities – acquired or inherent (Prov.18:16). Be too valuable to be ignored.

The principle of productivity: It involves refining and developing your value and turning it into a product or service. Creativity, innovation, competence, and excellence are magnets attracting people, resources, and opportunities to your life (Prov.22:29).

The principle of increase/multiplication (Matt.25:14-30): Know how to ‘grow’ money through savings and investments. However, you should be cautious and invest only in things you understand.

The principle of networking: Connect with people of like minds and enablers (Prov.13:20). Your network determines your net worth.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Do you think you can only pray your way out to be successful? Discuss.

CONCLUSION: When God blesses you, He brings people, opportunities, and resources together to make you great.

1. Mention some fundamental truths about wealth

2. Mention four principles necessary to get wealth in the kingdom way.

TOPIC: Ravish Your Spouse

MEMORY VERSE: “Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.” – Proverbs 5:19 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Proverbs 5:15-20 (KJV)

15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.

18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

LESSON INTRODUCTION: To be ravished is to have a feeling of delight; being filled with wonder and enchantment. So, to ravish your spouse is to give him or her an atmosphere full of passion and fascination. The husband, as well as his wife, has crucial roles to play to enjoy a romantic and successful marriage.

LESSON OUTLINES

ROLES OF THE HUSBAND AND HIS WIFE

BENEFITS OF RAVISHING YOUR SPOUSE

1. ROLES OF THE HUSBAND AND HIS WIFE

Being a good husband is not something that comes naturally to some men. However, loving another person is the most selfless thing anyone can do. Therefore:

A husband who loves his wife should celebrate her always (Prov.31:28b): be her best friend, appreciate her and share in her feelings (Gen.26:8).

A good husband should be protective and shield his wife from being disrespected by others (Eph.5:29).

He also respects her opinions, wishes, beliefs and communicates without using abusive words (Col.3:19; 4:6).

He does not force her to give up on her dreams to follow his, rather, they talk things through to see what works for both of them (Rom.12:10).

The husband should focus on the strength of his wife and talk less about her weaknesses (discuss the grey area and pray together for a change) -1 Pet.3:7; 4:8.

Do not lose the romance. (SOS.1:2; Prov.5:19). To be romantic, a husband should keep in mind important dates (wedding anniversary, birthdays, etc.)- Rom. 12:15.

As a good husband, be humorous and know how to cheer up your wife especially when she feels low (Prov.15:13; 17:22).

On the other hand, married women should note that:

To ravish your husband is a divine assignment given to you by God – to be your husband’s helper (Gen.2:18; Prov.12:4).

They should be women of virtue (Prov.12:4; 14:1).

To ravish your husband, you must be submissive to him (Eph.5:22; 1Pet.3:1-2).

As a wife you should be spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and recreationally knitted with your husband (Prov.12:25).

They must be caring and manage the home well (Prov.31:15).

Meeting your husband’s sexual needs is vital: do not use sex as a weapon of denial (SOS 1:13; 1Cor.7:4-5).

The husband must be celebrated and honoured as a king: in fact, he is your king.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: (This is a discussion). At what point do spouses deviate from their responsibilities? Why?

2. BENEFITS OF RAVISHING YOUR SPOUSE

When a husband and his wife are knitted, there will be intimacy and mutual trust (Mk.10:8). Their love will be unquenchable (SOS 8:7). There will be joy, peace and progress in the home (Ps.128:1-6). It contributes to good health (Prov.14:30). Without a doubt, God will be present in such a loving home and their prayers will receive quick answers (Matt. 18:19; 1Pet. 3:7).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: (Discussion) considering the definition of “ravish” indicated in the “Lesson Introduction,” what are the negative effects of not ravishing one’s spouse as indicated in the five benefits stated above.

CONCLUSION: Sweeten your relationship with your spouse and the bliss will be long lasting.

QUESTIONS:

Mention two roles each, for the husband and his wife.

What are the benefits of ravishing one’s spouse?

ASSIGNMENT: List five (5) things each, that a husband and his wife can do, to make ravishing one another difficult. (2×5=10 Marks).
