STUDIES IN THE BOOK OF EXODUS

TOPIC: ISRAEL IN EGYPT

Exodus 1:1-7

INTRODUCTION:

Our God is a God of plan and design. He knows the end from the

beginning. Whatsoever He does is for our good and the

furtherance of His purpose for our lives. As we will be learning

from the Israelites today may our lives also become a source of

good lessons for the world, Amen.

A. Why should Israel be in Egypt? God spoke to Abram on the day He

entered into covenant with him that his seeds will be in Egypt for a

specific period of time. To Israel, Egypt was a school, the cauldron to

bring the best out of God's children.

Gen. 15:13-21, 12:10, 37:28, Exo. 2:5-10, Gal. 3:22-29, Exo. 1:11-

14, Heb. 5:8, 12:5-13.

B. A family can enter into bondage through the activity of one person.

Circumstances pushed Jacob to move into Egypt, and all his children

moved with him. Some families are in bondage today because of the

activities of one person.

Jos. 7:1-5, I Sam. 2:27-33, 17:8-11, 28:16-19, ll Sam. 12:9, 10,

ll Kings 20:12-18.

C. Conclusion:

It was God's mercies that brought out Israel from Egypt. We all need

His mercies everyday.

 TOPIC: Marriage Has A Price

MEMORY VERSE: “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” – Genesis 2:18 (NKJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 5:22-33 (KJV)

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

INTRODUCTION: Marriage is a wonderful institution ordained by God for the good of humanity. However, just as every item of purchase has a price tag on it, marriage is not different. There are sacrifices and commitments to be put in place for a successful marriage.

LESSON OUTLINE:

FEATURES OF A GOOD MARRIAGE

PRICES TO PAY

1. FEATURES OF A GOOD MARRIAGE

A good marriage is peaceful. This is not the absence of storms (Luke 8:23) but because Jesus, the Prince of peace, dwells in the couple; the peace of God that passes all understanding is evident in the marriage (Ephesians 2:14; Philippians 4:7). Joy is also apparent; this joy is however not dependent on ephemeral things of life alone (Romans 15:13; Galatians 5:22). The free flow of forgiveness between a couple signifies a good union (Matthew 6:14). Honouring God and His word is a healthy union (Job 23:11-12, Psalm 119:2-3) as such couples are relieved of unnecessary tensions and confusion. Having a high opinion and being courteous to each other is a characteristic of a good marriage relationship (1Peter 3:6-7). A high level of respect exhibited by couples for each other depicts a noble marriage. Always doting on each other is a good sign of a good marriage (Genesis 26:8). Through knowledge of each other in all areas is important; that means ‘there is nothing to hide’ (Proverbs 13:16). Sustaining the friendship started in courtship shows a good marriage thus the couple enjoys the company of each other (Proverbs 5:18-19).

2. PRICES TO PAY

A good marriage comes with a high cost which is beyond the cost of an exotic wedding garment or ring. This cost would be paid with a lot of determination, hard work, and prayers. Some of the prices to pay include:

Giving up on individualism in order to achieve unity of purpose, especially in the areas of finance and work balance. (1Corinthians 3:3; Psalm 133:1-3).

Discarding all selfish behaviours.

Being open to each other. Stop hiding necessary information that should be made available to your spouse (Proverbs 27:5, Amos 3:3). Openness relieves the home of speculations and suspicious.

The sole belief and use of ‘my’ should be consciously changed to ‘our children’ ‘our responsibilities’ etc. (1Corinthians 4:6-7).

Couples should develop a strong link and stick together in their drives and accomplishments in order to have each other’s back (Song of Solomon 1:14; 2:16).

Couples must always yield to God through obedience to His word and saying ‘yes’ to His will (Psalm 119:11). The flesh must give way to the Spirit (Galatians 2:20; Galatians 5:19, 22).

Be intentional to make sure your marriage works because a successful marriage requires a lot of commitments (Ecclesiastes 9:9).

CONCLUSION

It will take a daily life of sacrifice and commitment to have a good marriage. Are you ready to pay the price?

TOPIC: The Power Of Choice

MEMORY VERSE: “Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.” – Job 34:4 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 13:8-13 (KJV)

8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Simply put, choice is the act of picking between two or more possibilities. The power of choice is the strong will to make a decision in the midst of several options. While it is generally opined that man is a choice being, Scriptures clearly establish that God has given man the power to choose (Josh.24:15). However, we live with the consequences of the choices we make whether good or bad. The onus, therefore, lies on us to make the right choices which in turn determine the course of our lives.

LESSON OUTLINES:

COMMON CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHOICES

1. COMMON CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES

There are several choices we make in life with their attendant consequences. For instance, the choices we make about food and exercise influence our physical health (Prov.25:16). The choices we make about our academic pursuits often affect our careers and occupations. The choices we make in reaction to life’s adversities affect our psychological well-being (Prov.24:10).

Other major choices we make in life include:

The choice of where to live/settle may determine the peace or discomfort, blessings or troubles we will have (Gen.13:8-11; 19:13; 26:1-2, 12-13);

The choice of who we marry will determine the bliss we enjoy or the blows we endure (Prov.18:22; 31:28; Prov.21:19; 1Kgs.11:4).

The choice of the friends we keep will determine how far we go and the quality of life we live (Prov.13:20; 18:24; 2Sam. 13:5; 10-14, 28-29).

The choice we make to be different will determine whether or not we will stand out from the crowd (Dan.1:8, 19; Heb.11:24-26).

The choice we make whether to serve God or not will determine the eternal reward we will get (Josh.24:15; Rev.22:11-12)

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What can be done to forestall the consequence of a wrong choice that is already made?

2. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHOICES

Many factors influence the choices we make in life. We need to crave for the right knowledge in order to be well informed (Prov.18:15). Self-control will help guide our choices and prevent us from making irrational decisions (Jam.1:19; 1Sam. 25:10). We must make good plans and be guided by a good vision before we make a choice (Ruth 3:1-4; Prov.16:3, 9). More importantly, prayers will enable us to key into the mind of God (1Sam.30:7-8; Ps.37:5, 23).

Conversely, pride, hypocrisy, doubt and negative thoughts among others, will hinder us from making the right choices (Prov.11:2; Ps.10:4; Isa.32:6; Jam.1:8). We must strive to always have the correct mind frame all the time (Prov.4:23).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should discuss other factors that influence people’s choices.

CONCLUSION: If we have made a wrong choice in the past, it is time to forgive ourselves and move on with life as we make necessary corrections to avoid any repetition of such.

QUESTIONS:

1 Give three (3) examples of life’s choices and their consequences.

2 Mention some factors that can hinder us from making the right choices

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five (5) ways your choices have affected you either positively or negatively (2×5=10 Marks).

THE CHOSEN OF THE LORD (6)

Text: Jonah 1: 5-16

INTRODUCTION:

In the last part of this series, we examined the chosen as channels

of promise and as victors and not the vanquished.

Today, as we conclude this series, may the Lord Himself teach

and bless us through His word in Jesus Name.

1. MANY ARE CALLED, FEW ARE CHOSEN

The call of God unto salvation is given to many but as far the kingdom

of God is concerned, only the FEW who respond to the call and

endure their salvation to the end are CHOSEN.

Matt. 22:14, Matt. 11:28, Jn. 3:16, Rev. 3:20, 22:17, Ep. 1:4-5, ll

Thess. 2:13-14, Jn. 1:11-12, 3:3-7.

2. THE FIRST SHALL BE THE LAST

In heaven, there will be a lot of surprises as many who were thought to

be great in the church will be ranked behind others and many who

were unknown will be exalted to glorious positions because God does

not judge or value people by outward appearance but by the sincerity

and purity of their hearts.

TOPIC: Handling Crushes

MEMORY VERSE: “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;” – 1 Peter 2:11 (NKJV)‬

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Samuel 13:1-15 (KJV)

1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.

3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.

4 And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.

5 And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.

6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.

7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat.

8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

9 And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.

12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.

13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.

15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

INTRODUCTION: To ‘crush on someone’ is to have a feeling of romantic love for that person, especially someone you have not met physically or have any relationship with. Furthermore, the way someone smells, laughs, or smiles can play role in creating a crush while the feelings accompanying a crush can be overpowering. Crushing on someone is synonymous with ‘infatuation’ (an obsessive focus on the opposite gender). This study will attempt to distinguish between crushes and real love as well as proffer a way to handle this feeling.

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CRUSH AND REAL LOVE

HOW TO HANDLE CRUSHES

1. THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CRUSH AND REAL LOVE

Crush may begin just the same way love does, but love goes beyond physical and emotional attractions to a point of sacrificial actions (1 Cor.13:4-9). If you observe that you are only attracted to a person because of the person’s external beauty or friendliness, you are just crushing. You also need to know that whenever you discover that your thoughts toward a particular person are predominated by sexual fantasies, coupled with lustful thoughts, then, you might merely be crushing rather than loving. This should not be entertained beyond the first fleeting thought. Love is driven by commitment and patience while crush is driven by emotions, impatience, and satisfaction of one’s selfish desires. Love seeks to serve the other person and does what is best for them (1 Cor.13:4-7) while crush causes you to act foolishly, not caring about anyone but yourself and demanding fulfilment of your wants. Love is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal.5:22) while crush can be the spark that ignites sinful thoughts, such as lust. Love never fails but crush does (1 Cor.13:8).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should distinguish between crush and real love.

2. HOW TO HANDLE CRUSHES

Crushes are natural emotional tendencies that can degenerate to sin if not properly managed. If you find yourself thinking day and night about one person, you may have crossed the line from a normal liking to an unhealthy obsession. Seeking intimate times of fellowship with God can help keep that crush in perspective. You start by being honest with the Lord about your feelings, like the Psalmists (Ps.38:9; 139:23). Ask Him to help you keep your thoughts pure and your actions pleasing to Him (Ps.19:14). Ask God for wisdom to handle this difficult situation (Jam.1:5). In addition, it is important for you to realise that lust is a bad substitute for love (2Sam. 13:15). Do not follow your lustful emotion (Rom.6:12), refuse to fuel your lust, walk in the Spirit (Gal.5:25), confess the word of God to rid your heart of filth (Jn.17:17). If you are a married person and you are attracted to another person, take time to build what you like in that person in your spouse. Above all, it is very important to seek wise and godly counsel.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The Class should mention other practical steps to handling crushes.

CONCLUSION: Do not run your life by feelings (Col.3:5), life decisions should be made through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and godly counsel (Prov.24:6).

QUESTIONS:

What does it mean to crush on someone?

Mention three ways to handle a crush.

TOPIC: The Fruit Of The Holy Spirit II

MEMORY VERSE: “And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” – James 3:18 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Galatians 5:16-18 (KJV)

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The life of the Christian is a constant battle between our sinful nature and our new nature in Christ (Gal.5:17). Unfortunately, just because we have accepted Christ does not mean we are automatically immune to sinful temptations (Rom.7:14-25). Sometimes, it may feel like we are trapped in a desire to reach for the sinful thing rather than the godly thing. This does not always have to be the case. We can overcome the flesh.

LESSON OUTLINES:

CHOOSE TO BEAR THE FRUIT

WORK AT IT

1. CHOOSE TO BEAR THE FRUIT

Now that we are in Christ, we have the power to conquer the sinful desires of the flesh (2Cor.5:17; Rom.8:37). The very presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts means we can now choose godliness over sinfulness (Phil.1:22). The choice is 100% OURS (Deut.30:19). We are no longer a slave to our sinful nature (Rom.6:14, 18). We can choose love over hate, patience over hostile frustration, faithfulness over disloyalty, self-control over lustful desires…etc. This is the beauty of having the Holy Spirit-He gives us the POWER to fight (Phil.2:13; 4:13). All we must do to tap into that power is to practice obedience to God’s word and His direction (Jn.15:4, 10, 14; Col.3:16; Ps.1:2-3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss the thin line between our emotions and exhibiting the fruit of the spirit.

2. WORK AT IT

Some Christians have asked if it is possible to produce all the components of the fruit of the Spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This seems like a lot to work on. First, we should remember that God will not give us a load we cannot bear (Matt.11:29-30). Second, the ‘yoke’ of bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit is not just possible, it is mandatory (Lk.1:37; Matt.5:48). However, since the enemies of our salvation – the devil and the flesh – will not give up easily on us, we are bound to face the temptation of yielding to sin occasionally (1Pet.5:8-10). We must continue to work at attaining perfection (Phil.2:12), surrender totally to the dictates of the Holy Spirit and resist the devil (Jam.4:7). The Apostle Paul charges believers to make no provision for the flesh (Rom.13:14). Let us keep working at bearing all the components of the fruit of the Spirit; it is possible (Phil.4:13). We must daily, take steps to nurture our relationship with Jesus so that we can grow to look more like Him in His manner, attitude and actions (Heb.12:2; Phil.2:5).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should mention other practical steps a believer can take to produce all the fruit of the Spirit.

CONCLUSION: Though we may struggle and fail, we will surely conquer the flesh and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. We ought to daily strive for, work for, and yearn for the fruit of the Spirit.

QUESTIONS:

Is fruit-bearing a matter of choice? How?

Can we bear all the fruit? How?

ASSIGNMENT: Student should mention five (5) reasons why it is important for believers to bear the fruit of the spirit (2×5=10 Marks).

TOPIC: The Fruit Of The Holy Spirit I

MEMORY VERSE: “(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)” – Ephesians 5:9 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: One of the reasons Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit is to help us learn how to be more godly (John 16:12-15). The Holy Spirit will convict us of our sin (John 16:8) and guide us in choosing well when faced with temptations, thus producing godly characteristics within us (Ephesians 3:16; John 16:13). This is what the Bible describes as the ‘fruit of the Spirit.

LESSON OUTLINES

WHY “FRUIT?”

THE OPPOSITE OF BEARING FRUIT

1. WHY “FRUIT?”

The Bible uses a lot of agricultural metaphors because they were easily understood by the highly agricultural culture of the time. The “fruit of the Spirit” refers to the “results” we should see in our lives after receiving the Holy Spirit and working on our hearts over time (Romans 8:9;12:1-2). The Apostle Paul gives us the component of the ‘fruit’ as “……love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self control…… Galatians 5:21-22.

The ‘fruit’ metaphor helps us see our faith as a tree with branches that may or may not produce fruit, depending on how well we take care of the tree itself. If we give the tree nourishment (God’s word) -1Peter 1:23;2:2, then it will grow bigger. If we clear away weeds and insects (sinful tendencies) -Ephesians 4:22-31; Colossians 3:8-10, then keep the tree healthy. If we consult the ‘professional’ Gardener (God) -1Chronicles 16:11- then we will ensure we are on the right track.

2. THE OPPOSITE OF BEARING FRUIT

If you are a Christian, and you are not exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in your life, at best, you will experience stagnation-no growth (James 2:14-26). At worst, the result of “bad fruit” is death (Romans 6:20-23; Proverbs 14:12). Notice that Galatians 5:22 start with the word “But.” The Apostle Paul tells us that the opposite of these spiritual fruit. Let us take a look at the verses just before the fruit list: “Now the work of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred , variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: if the which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” -Galatians 5:19-21. This is a list of things that someone who does not have the Holy Spirit’s influence would have problems with.

CONCLUSION

On one hand, our sinfulness produces rotted, poisoned fruit, which reflects our sinful nature and hurt us in the end. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit produces beautiful, nourishing fruit that reflects God’s nature and will ultimately benefit our lives.

Why should Christian bear the fruit of the Spirit?

THE CHOSEN OF THE LORD (5)

Text: Jonah 1: 5-16

In the last part of this series, we looked into some spiritual virtues

as “Fruits of the Spirit” and fruit-bearing, the secret of answered

prayers.

Today, as we continue in our study, may the Almighty God bless

us richly through His word in Jesus Name.

channels to carry out the promises of redemption. God’s grace,

salvation, protection, goodness and blessings given to His faithful

people in love are not just to one nation (Israel) but to the whole

human race.

Isa. 41:8-11, Gen. 17:7-8, Ps. 135:4, Deut. 7:6-9, Acts 2:39, Joel

2:32, Gal. 3:14, Ep. 3:6, I Jn. 2:5, 2 Cor. 1:20.

2. THE CHOSEN AS VICTORS AND NOT THE VANQUISHED

God has chosen His People to be winners in the battles of life and

not failures or the defeated. Because Jesus Christ our Lord and

Saviour won, we must also win.

*TOPIC: SEXUAL PURITY IS COOL*

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 6:15-20

MEMORY VERSE: “For this is the will of God, your sanctifcation: that you should abstain from sexual immorality” 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (NKJV).

INTRODUCTION: Purity is important to God and staying sexually pure before and during marriage is trendy because purity has to do with the mind and the act. The sex journey starts from the mind, no wonder Jesus says whoever looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her. Also, Hebrews 13:4 boldly declares that a marriage is honourable when the bed is undefiled. Premarital sex, lustful sexual thoughts, and any form of sexual vices are not acceptable to God because God is holy and we are His temple.

OUTLINES:

1. ILLS OF PREMARITAL SEX AND LUSTFUL THOUGHTS

2. WHY SEXUAL PURITY IS COOL

1. ILLS OF PREMARITAL SEX AND LUSTFUL THOUGHTS

To engage in premarital sex (sex before marriage) is to commit a grievous sin in God’s sight (1 Cor.10:3) and to also sin against one’s body (1 Cor.6:18). Premarital sex also comes with a sense of hatred or guilt that haunts its victims (2 Sam. 13:15). Unwanted pregnancy may result from this illicit sexual act, thus, bringing about shame and reproach to the victim and it may even result in abortion – which is murder (Ex.20:13).

Some Sexually Transmitted Infections/Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs/STDs), HIV/AIDS, etc. may result from this illicit act. Also, the negative emotional and psychological impacts of premarital sexual behaviour such as; a life of reqrets, loss of self-respect, depression (2Sam.13:19-20), loss of family support, substance abuse, and even suicide are some of the problems associated with illicit sexual activities.

Apart from the fact that lustful thoughts are sinful (Matt.5:28), they also help to trigger illicit sex (Mk.7:21) and defile its victims (Rom.124). In it all, the judgment of God is on those who defile themselves (1Cor.3:17). Engaging in uncontrollable lustful thought is a sign that one is not filled with the Holy Spirit as one should (1Thess. 4:3-5).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

What dangers can sexual impurity cause?

2. WHY SEXUAL PURITY IS COOL

Sexual purity brings liberty from sin and produces holy vessels that are unruffled (cool) and free from self-guilt (Gal.5:1, 2 Tim.2:21). Staying pure sexually prevents emotional entanglements that may negatively affect future relationships and marriages (1 Cor.6:16). It secures one’s destiny for good (Gen.39:12; 41:38-42).

The pure in heart are blessed because they will see God (Matt.5:8). Sexual purity helps to maintain a steady relationship with God (Ps.24:3-4). It also brings about peace with God and with oneself (Rom.8:6). The fear of contracting STIs/STDs will be eliminated. Unlawful partners do not have access to your godly temple (2Cor.6:15-16). You honour God and He honours you in return (1Sam.2:30b).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Give additional reasons you think sexual purity is cool

CONCLUSION

Staying sexually pure is realistic when the flesh is put under subjection all the time and the Holy Spirit is in control.

QUESTION

* Mention four ills of premarital sex

* Mention three blessings of sexual purity

House Fellowship Leader Manual February 2023

TOPIC: Time And Chance

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to use ordained time profitably.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Leader should remind members that we have a God who is ever present, ready to respond to our yearnings.

MEMORY VERSE: “I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” – Ecclesiastes 9:11 (KJV)

BIBLE TEXT: Romans 8:28, Job 14:14 (KJV)

Romans 8:28:

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Job 14:14:

14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The Almighty God is the Lord over “Time and Chance”

God is timeless because He lives in eternity. He has been in existence before the creation of the Heavens and the Earth. A thousand years is but a day before God because He operates in Kairos while we operate in Chronos.

God has an appointed time for everyone to fulfill his/her purpose in life. This can only be achieved by being at the right place, at the right time and doing the right thing by waiting in the place of prayer. This book of Job 14:14 says “All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come”.

LESSON AIM: To have understanding that there is provision of opportunity and timing for it’s happening.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to:

i. know definition of time and chance (Opportunity)

ii. See examples of Biblical characters that used that time and chance correctly.

TEXT REVIEW: ROMANS 8:28, JOB 14:14

i. There is need to wait for one’s time of visitation and emancipation.

ii. All things work together for good for lovers of Christ that wait for their time.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: DEFINITION OF TIME AND CHANCE

TIME: A measurable period during which an action or condition exits or continues.

It is a portion of duration which God has given to man. Time can also be referred to as opportunity.

CHANCE – Incident or Occurrence of events in the absence of obvious intentions or cause Ecclesiastes 9:11 explains to us that it is not the fastest runner that wins in a race nor the strongest man that wins in a battle. But Time and Chance happen to them all. It means that nothing happens in life by accident, the Almighty God is the force that controls ‘Time and Chance’.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: BIBLE CHARACTERS WHO EXPERIENCED TIME AND CHANCE

JOSEPH – He wanted the butler to help him immediately he (butler) was released from the prison but it did not happen until after two years, Genesis 41.

DAVID – He obeyed his father by going to see his brothers then he saw Goliath terrorising the Army of Israel, 1 Samuel 17

ESTHER – She became a queen in order to save Jews from destruction, Esther 6.

Hannah – She needed a son and God needed a Prophet to replace Eli, 1 Samuel 1-2.

WOMAN WITH ISSUE OF BLOOD – She got the chance and perfectly use it, Mark 3:25-34.

RAHAB, THE HARLOT – Utilised the chance and got better offer, Joshua 6.

RUTH, THE MOABITRESS – She got covenanted to David’s dynasty.

ACTIVITY: Let members study those that refused to wait for their time and the repercussions.

SUMMARY: Time and Chance happens to all issues of life.

CONCLUSION: There is time for everything. Doing things at the wrong time would lead to disaster. God has an appointed time for our miracles but be sensitive to positive chance that can bring newness to the journey of your life.

TOPIC: You Are Important

MEMORY VERSE: “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” – Psalm 8:4 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 49:14‭-‬16 (KJV)

14 But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.A

INTRODUCTION: As a human being, you are so important that you have about 100 billion nerve cells in your brain and that brain is said to be a supercomputer. God also inscribed your name on the palms of His hands (Isa.49:16) and so you are always before Him. You are so relevant to God that He gave His Son-Jesus for your life (Jn.3:16). The Psalmist even asked God a fundamental question about you in Psalm 8:4 “What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” It is high time you began to walk and live in that height of significance irrespective of your colour, gender, or physique.

LESSON OUTLINES:

1 FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE

2 WALKING IN SIGNIFICANCE

1. FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE

You are so special and significant in the plans of God that, He took the time to make you in His image and likeness (Gen.1:26). Even while you were in the womb, nobody knew how your bones were formed, except God (Eccl.11:5). As a unique individual, all the hairs of your head are numbered and known to God (Matt.10:30). You are so awesomely created that no one else is exactly like you: your thumbprints are so distinct and there is no other thumbprint like yours. Your eyes are so vital, they are called the light of the body (Matt.6:22). You are so central in God’s programme that after creation He looked at you and said you are very good (Gen.1:31). He made you a sweet fragrance of Christ (2Cor.2:15). You are privileged to be called the heir of God and joint-heirs with Christ Jesus (Rom.8:17). The Spirit of God dwells in you, so you carry His presence (Rom.8:11).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students to discuss ways they are different from other creatures.

2. WALKING IN SIGNIFICANCE

With the knowledge of being fearfully created in the likeness of God, it is imperative that you walk and live significantly in that light (Matt.5:14). As joint-heirs with Christ, you are to walk in dominion (Gen.1:26) with your heads lifted high in Christ Jesus as a king and priest (Rev.5:10; 1Pet.2:9). You must refuse to cave in to low self-esteem but rather, walk in the confidence of Christ the King (Acts 28:31). As a key personality, you must carry yourself with dignity anywhere you are and refuse to live in fear (2Tim.1:7). You must stand boldly, even before the strong and mighty, to declare who you are in Christ Jesus (Jn.7:26). You must also occupy till He comes (Lk.19:13). Like the saints of old, you are to show your peculiarity as a chosen generation (1Pe.2:9) and a sort after person (Dan.4:9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Students should discuss additional things they can do to walk in the significance of their importance.

CONCLUSION: It does not matter whether you are tall or short; fat or slim; male or female, etc. you are God’s creature who is expected to fulfil a specific purpose on earth. You are important.

QUESTIONS:

Give three reasons why you are unique

Mention three things to do to walk in significance.

FURTHER READING:

Monday: Isaiah 40:27 (KJV) – 27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?

Tuesday: Matthew 7:11 (KJV) – 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Wednesday: Song Of Solomon 8:6 (KJV) – 6 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

Thursday: Isaiah 60:4 (KJV) – 4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.

Friday: Zechariah 10:10 (KJV) – 10 I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them.

Saturday: Psalm 34:22 (KJV) – 22 The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

Sunday: Romans 5:5 (KJV) – 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five practical things you will start immediately to add values. (No Mark).

TOPIC: Biblical Fast

MEMORY VERSE: “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:” – Daniel 9:3 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Daniel 10:2-3 (KJV)

2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.

3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Fasting, in the Bible, is total abstinence from pleasure-giving activities for a set time, to devote oneself to seeking God. While there are many ways believers could fast, too often, the focus is on abstinence from food. In this lesson, we shall examine different types of biblical fast, basic cautions and reasons for fasting.

LESSON OUTLINES:

1. TYPES OF FAST IN THE BIBLE

1 Food fast-This is abstinence from food/drinks. It may take the form of:

i. Regular fast: This is done by abstaining from all foods, both solid and liquid. (2Chrn. 20:3). The fast is usually broken daily or periodically (Jer.36:6).

ii. Partial fast: This is inspired by Prophet Daniel. All meat and animal products are disallowed. The Daniel Fast includes vegetables, legumes, whole grains, seeds, and water. These guidelines are based on Daniel’s request of “nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink” (Dan.1:8-14).

iii. Absolute or full fast: Where no food or water is consumed (Est.4:16; Acts 27:33). For instance, Moses, Elijah and the Lord Jesus Christ did a forty-day absolute fast (Deut. 9:9; 1 Kgs.19:7-8; Lk.4:2).

2 Sex fast-The Bible also refers to ‘sexual fast’ (Ex.19:15). A married couple can mutually agree to abstain from sex for a short period to devote themselves to prayers (1 Cor.7:5).

3 ‘Pleasure’ fast – Another way is to confine or isolate oneself from people and pleasurable things to a place as a means of worship, studying the Bible and praying to God for a purpose (Lk.2:36-37; 5:16). Time alone with God requires discipline.

Scripturally speaking, is there a general rule to the time of breaking a fast?

2. REASONS AND BASIC CAUTIONS

Fasting is far more about focusing on God than abstinence from food or other things that give pleasure (Zech.7:5). Also, people fast for various reasons. Some for spiritual strength (Isa.40:30-31), supernatural revelation, wisdom and understanding (Ezr.8:21; Dan.9:22), supernatural breakthrough (Zech.8:19) repentance from sinful ways (Joel 2:12-13; Dan.9:3-5), spiritual hunger and demonstration of love for God’s people and burden for souls (2 Cor.11:27-28; Matt.5:6) and sharing with the poor and destruction of wicked works, among others (Isa.58:6-7).

Believers should exercise some caution while fasting. For instance, fasting should be limited to a set time and for a clear purpose (1 Cor.7:5; Est.4:16). It is neither intended to punish the body nor a dieting method (Isa.58:5) but to redirect attention to God. It is a period to give up self-indulging activities for a deeper fellowship with God (Matt.4:1-2). Anyone can fast, but some may not be able to fast from food (diabetics, for example). However, everyone can temporarily give up something to draw closer to God (Ex.19:15). Biblical fast is to be done in a spirit of humility and joyfulness (Matt.6:16-18). It should not be to manipulate or do evil (Isa.58:4a; Acts 23:21). In breaking ‘absolute and long fast,’ warm liquids, (not carbonated drinks) are advised and should be taken in bits.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Does the inability to spend quality time in prayer nullify fast?

CONCLUSION: Ask God for wisdom (Jam.1:5) as regards how and for how long and what purpose He wants you to fast.

QUESTIONS:

Mention the types of fast in the Bible

Mention three (3) reasons believers fasted in the Bible.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five (5) benefits that can be derived from fasting (2×5=10 Marks).
