THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 12)
Text: 1 Samuel 15
INTRODUCTION:
In the last part of this series, we learnt that the Lord answers not
the prayer of the sinners and that seeking answers from the evil
spirits is a terrible sin against God.
Today, as we conclude this study of the life of King Saul, may the
Lord Himself teach and bless us mightily through His word in

1. THE END OF THE UNJUST

Youths Sunday School 20 August 2023 – Katartismos
TOPIC: Katartismos
MEMORY VERSE: “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:” – Ephesians 4:12(KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 4:8-16 (KJV) )
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
INTRODUCTION: ‘Katartismos’ from the word ‘Katartizo’ is a concept in Greek that means to mend, repair, make whole, or perfect. It also means to make something or someone completely adequate or sufficient for a purpose or task. The basic idea is that of putting a thing into the condition in which it ought to be. This concept is however used in relation to the perfecting and equipping of saints for the God-given assignments committed to them. God wants His people to become perfect in all ramifications (Genesis 17:1). He desires nothing less than perfection (Matthew 5:48). Perfection is possible for all saints in Christ.
LESSON OUTLINES:
THE SAINTS DESCRIBED
STEPS TO PERFECTION
1. THE SAINTS DESCRIBED
The word “Saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious.” It is almost always used in the plural, “Saints.” (Acts 9:13,32; 26:10; Philippians 4:21). These are the group of people set apart for the Lord and His kingdom. Scripturally speaking, the “saints” are the body of Christ, Christians, the Church. Christians are considered as saints (1 Corinthians 1:2). They are called to be saints, to increasingly allow their daily life to closely match their position in Christ. This is the biblical description and calling of the saints. The saints are both on earth and in heaven (Psalm 16:3; Matthew 27:52; Zechariah 14:5); everyone who has received Jesus Christ by faith is a saint (Psalm 89:7; Acts 9:32, 41; Acts 26:10; Romans 1:7); saints are called to revere, worship, and pray to God alone (Psalm 149:1-9). Every believer becomes a saint at salvation through the cleansing of sin by the blood of Jesus. At this point the righteousness of Christ is imputed on the believer: he is no longer a sinner but a saint in Christ (Ephesians 2:6-8). However, as long as the believer is in this world, temptations and trials are inevitable. He must therefore work out his salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:5). There are three references referring to godly character of saints: They must live worthy (Romans 16:1-2), they are to build up the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12), they are to be free from immorality or any impurity or greed (Ephesians 5:3).
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Are you a saint?
2. STEPS TO PERFECTION
There are vital steps that help in building and perfecting the saints. These include:
Study of God’s word (Acts 20:32): It is the food for the saints (1 Peter 5:2; Hebrews 5:12-13; 1 Peter 2:2). It cleanses them always (John 15:3; Ephesians 5:26), it continually trains them for perfection (2 Timothy 3:16-17), God uses it primarily to equip His saints (Psalm 119:9-11; Psalm 1:2-3, Joshua 1:8).
Focus on Jesus: The saints continually get perfected as much as they look to Jesus their master (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Aim for the Prize of the high calling: They also get perfected by setting their gaze on the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14) shedding off the weights and sins that easily beset them (Hebrews 12:1) and bringing their physical body into subjection (1 Corinthians 9:26-27).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should mention what they are doing to ensure they become saints.
CONCLUSION: God wants nothing but perfection from His Saints (Genesis 6:9b; 2 Chronicles 19:9). If you aim at it, you will get it!
QUESTIONS:
Describe who a saint is?
Identify the steps to perfection.
FURTHER READING:

TOPIC: Dynamics Of Grace (Part 2)
MEMORY VERSE: “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:” – Hebrews 12:28 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 8:6-9 (KJV)
6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.
7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
8 I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.
9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: In addition to the description of ‘Grace’ given in the previous lesson, Grace can also be referred to as the divine influence in a human heart that reflects on the outside. It produces favour, beauty, goodwill, loveliness and ability. It increase as one grows in the knowledge of God’s word (2 Peter 3:18). We shall therefore consider the various dimensions of grace mentioned in the Bible as well as some actions that can be taken with or against grace.
LESSON OUTLINES
DIMENSIONS OF GRACE
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH/AGAINST GRACE
1. DIMENSIONS OF GRACE
The Bible talks about grace in various dimensions. For instance, we have common grace (Psalm 145:9; Matthew 5:45), saving grace (Ephesians 2:4-9; Titus 2:11), abundant grace (2 Corinthians 4:15), sanctifying grace (Titus 2:12; 1 John 2:15-16), sustaining grace (Romans 6:14; Jude: 1:24-25), supernatural/enabling grace (Philippians 4:13; Luke1:37), service (gifting) grace (Romans 12:6; Ephesians 4:7), sufficient grace (2 Corinthians 9:8; 1 Peter 5:10), victorious grace (1 Samuel 17:36-37), sacrificial giving grace (Genesis 22:9-10; 2 Corinthians 12:15), great grace (Acts 4:33), eternal grace (1 Corinthians 9:27), etc.
The key to access and operate at any of these levels or dimensions of grace lies in the degree of one’s connection with Christ from whom all grace originates and the desire to grow in Him (John 15:5; Philippians 4:13; 2 Peter 3:18).
2. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH/AGAINST GRACE
There are lots of benefits that a believer can derive from grace apart from salvation. Grace can impart great blessings (Psalm 84:11). It also imparts faith (Acts 18:27). In addition, it makes one God’s elect (Romans 11:5-6), gives boldness (1 Corinthians 15:10), calls believers to the ministry (Galatians 1:15), helps render acceptable service (Hebrews 12:28), gives seasoning to speech (Colossians 4:6), gives strength (2 Timothy 2:1), helps in time of need (Hebrews 4:16) and brings hope (2 Thessalonians 2:16), among others.
However, it is possible to do the following against grace:
Receive grace in vain (2 Corinthians 6:1).
Frustrate grace in one’s life (Galatians 2:21).
Fall from grace (Galatians 1:6-8; 5:4).
Fail of the grace of God (Hebrews 12:15).
Turn grace into lasciviousness (Jude 4).
Sin in spite of grace (Romans 6:1).
Reject grace through pride (James 4:6).
CONCLUSION: Every believer must aspire to grow in grace (2 Peter 3:18). It is a dangerous thing to abuse grace despite its benefits.
QUESTIONS:
State the dimensions of Grace known to you.
What can you do with/against grace?
FURTHER READINGS:
Monday: 1 Peter 5:5-6 (KJV); 5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Tuesday: Proverbs 3:34 (KJV); Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
Wednesday: Proverbs 11:16 (KJV); A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
Thursday: Luke 9:16 (KJV); Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
Friday: Luke 22:19 (KJV); And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Saturday: John 1:12 (KJV); But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Sunday: 1 Corinthians 15:10 (KJV); But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
ASSIGNMENT: Identify with any two of the dimensions of grace above and state how they have worked for you (5×2=10 Marks).

Sunday School 13 August 2023
TOPIC: Dynamics Of Grace (Part 1)
MEMORY VERSE: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,” – Titus 2:11
BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 2:4-10 (KJV)
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: The word translated ‘Grace’ in Hebrew is ‘chen,’ which means to bend or stoop in kindness to another as a superior to an inferior (Gen. 6:8). The Greek word for ‘Grace’ is “Charis” and it connotes something beyond the ordinary course of what can be expected and therefore commendable (1Cor. 15:10). When used in reference to God, it is the benevolent action of Him stooping down to us in kindness to reach us in our needs and convey upon us a benefit. His grace has been termed ‘Unmerited favour’ but it is more than an attitude of favour or mercy.
LESSON OUTLINES
UNDERSTANDING GRACE
HOW TO RECEIVE GRACE
1. UNDERSTANDING GRACE
‘Grace’ connotes many things. It is often described as God’s favour towards the unworthy or His benevolence on the undeserving (Romans 5:8-10) translated into action that releases the enabling power into our live (1 Corinthians 15:10). Grace signifies the gift bestowed upon man for salvation (Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11) and for service (Ephesians 3:7-8; 4:7). It is also a virtue to be manifested (2 Corinthians 8:7) and a benediction to be enjoyed by believers in Christ (Ephesians 6:24). Grace helps in times of need (Philippians 4:19; Hebrews 4:16) and enables us to do exploits (Daniel 11:32; Philippians 4:13).
The covenant of grace differs considerably from the Old testament covenants under the law. While the law blessed ‘the good’, grace saves ‘the bad.’ The law accuses and convicts, ‘Grace’ cancels bonds and relieves the debtor (Romans 6:14).
Paul describes ‘grace’ as the appearance of the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards man (Titus 2:11 3:4). God shows both Mercy and Grace but they are not exactly the same. Mercy withholds a punishment we deserve; grace gives a blessing we do not deserve.
2. HOW TO RECEIVE GRACE
Basically, the grace of God can be received through the following ways but not limited to these:
By accepting God’s love towards all men (John 3:16; Romans 5:8)
By believing in the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9-10) through God’s mercy and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit (1 Timothy 1:13; Hebrews 4:16; Matthew 9:13).
By exercising our faith, no matter how little at all time (Matthew 17:20; Romans 1:17).
By being humble before God (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5).
By loving the Lord Jesus with all our hearts (Ephesians 6:24).
Through sufferings and trails arranged for us by God. (Romans 8:28; 1 Peter 5:10; 2 Corinthians 12:9).
Through the prophetic words of prayer contained in the bible or spoken to us by our Spiritual headstand fellow believers in Christ (Psalm 107:20; Acts 20:32; 2 Timothy 4:22; 1 Thessalonians 1:1).
CONCLUSION
Grace is the spring and source of all benefits received from God (Romans 11:6). God’s grace should not be taken for granted (Romans 6:1-2; Galatians 2:21).

TOPIC: Rules Of Engagement
MEMORY VERSE: “Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.” – Jonah 3:2 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 61:1-3 (KJV)
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
INTRODUCTION: Evangelism is the faithful proclamation of the truth of the Scriptures while living our lives as true followers of Jesus. Evangelism can be pretty hard or awkward when we have to confront a family member, a friend, schoolmate, acquaintance, or even a stranger who is not a Christian. Some people may get offended when they hear the gospel but there is no reason to give up. This is why it is expedient for every believer to know the rules of engagement when reaching out to sinners with the gospel.
LESSON OUTLINE
THE CONCEPT OF THE GOSPEL.
PREACHING THE GOSPEL.
1. THE CONCEPT OF THE GOSPEL
The Bible says everyone has sinned (Romans 3:23). It says sinners will die because of their sin (Ezekiel 18:20; Romans 6:23). However, God’s good news is amazing. He loves the world so much that He sent Jesus to die for the sins of sinners (Jn. 3:16). Jesus is the only person who has never sinned (1 Peter 2:22; 1 John 3:5), so He is the only person who could take the punishment for our sins (Romans 5:8). He rose from the dead to show us His power (1 Corinthians 15:4). Jesus is the only path to heaven (John 14:6). This is why believers need to share the gospel of Jesus to save the sinful world from destruction. However, such believers should be sure of their salvation (John 3:3; 1 Peter 1:23); live a pure life (1 John 3:3); be kind and patient (Ephesians 4:32); be prayerful (1 Thessalonians 5:17); study the word of God (2 Timothy 2:15); get wisdom (Proverbs 4:7) and exhibit other good and godly virtues (Philippians 4:8). The Bible also says we are to share the gospel with no excuses (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 3:15).
2. PREACHING THE GOSPEL
There are lots of reasons believers should share their faith wherever they go. Be encouraged that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to share the gospel (Ephesians 4:11-16). Some believers have a very easy time talking about Jesus to others. Believers can, however, follow these procedures: Seek and pray for opportunities to preach to someone (2 Peter 1:11); be cheerful and present your facts about salvation in a very simple way using simple language (Acts 17:23); share the testimony of your own salvation (Acts 22:6-9); tell the person to confess his/her sins and accept Jesus as his/her Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9-10); Remember to pray for the person you have preached to (Ephesians 1:15-16). In this era of technological advancement and social media proliferation, many souls can be reached for Christ via the various platforms available (Facebook, Whatsapp, telegram, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, etc). Do not be ashamed of sharing the gospel of our Lord Jesus with friends, families, old schoolmate (Romans 1:16). This act is our obligation as followers of Christ and it carries the power and backing of God for the salvation of souls that are perishing (John 14:12; Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-18). Do not just be a social influencer, be a kingdom/gospel influencer (Titus 2:7).
CONCLUSION
Anyone who wins souls to the kingdom of God is wise. Join the train now. It is highly rewarding.

TOPIC: Soul-Winning And Discipleship
MEMORY VERSE: “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” – Proverbs 11:30 (KJV)
BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 9:37-38 (KJV)
Matthew 28:18-20:
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 9:37-38:
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: Soul winning is the act of preaching to people with the aim that they are converted into the kingdom of God. Discipleship is the strategic process of training and building people up firmly in God’s word after they have been converted into the kingdom of God.
You are a child of God today because someone preached to you, prayed for you and to the glory of God today you are in the family of God. Therefore, it’s now your turn to bring someone into the kingdom of God. In Matthew 28:18-20 – the great Commission.
LESSON AIM: To let members understand that soul winning is a divine mandate for all believers.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, members should:
Understand that soul winning and discipleship is very important.
Have understanding of different aspects on Christian discipleship.
TEXT REVIEW: Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 9:37-38.
All power is given to Christ Jesus both in heaven and on earth.
All believers are called to the work of soul winning.
Harvest is ripe for souls to be brought to knowledge of salvation.
LESSON OUTLINE ONE: POINTS TO CONSIDER
Disciples are the only one fit for the work of soul winning (Matthew 28:16-20). Jesus Christ had other followers, but during the great commission He was talking to His Disciples not all other followers.
Soul winning is more in what you do than in what you say. Jesus Christ lived all the commandments He has given us to obey. It’s His life and we see Him as an example this is why we are following Him. Even as you preach to the dying world, your life must match what you are saying. I’d rather say be a Jesus to the sinners out there. Our life as children of God is also a way of soul winning.
When you go out for witnessing, preach Jesus (the gospel) alone and not a denomination. Preach about the salvation of God. Mark 16:15
Don’t get into arguments when witnessing. It’s not right as a child of God to get involved into a debate. 2 Timothy 2:16
Let the Holy Spirit work in them. When you witness, Commit their hearts into the hands of God and keep on praying for them. Matthew 21:22
ACTIVITY: Get one soul to God’s kingdom this week.
SUMMARY: He that wins soul is wise (Proverbs 11:30). Let us bring joy into the kingdom of God (Luke 15:7).
CONCLUSION: Jesus Christ commanded us to make disciples of all nations. The work of soul winning therefore is not just for only a group of people, but for all the children of God. We bring great joy to heaven when we win a soul for Christ.

THE REJECTED VESSEL (Par t 11)
Text: 1 Samuel 15
INTRODUCTION:
Last week, we learnt that God's work cannot be done in the flesh
and that whatsoever we become in life is by the power of God as it
is written “not by might nor by power but the Spirit of God”.
Today, as we continue in our studies, may the Lord Himself teach
us His word and bless us richly in Jesus Name.
1. THE LORD ANSWERS NOT THE SINNERS
Living our lives in ungodly ways (in sins) instead of submitting to the
will of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit will cut us off from God's
help.
Calling upon Him therefore will be useless, unless we turn away from
our sins and unrighteousness.

7:14-15.
2. SEEKING ANSWERS FROM THE DEVIL (EVIL SPIRITS)
Turning to divination or a medium to seek for solution is not only the
deception of the devil but also a terrible sin against the living God.

TOPIC: Beware Of Scoffers
MEMORY VERSE: “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,” – 2 Peter 3:3 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: Jude 1:11-18 (KJV)
11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.
17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
INTRODUCTION: Scoffer, in Greek – ‘empaiktés,’ simply translates to a mocker. A scoffer mocks sin, Christ, twists God’s word for selfish gains, opposes the gospel, and the things of God. The Bible uses scornful, scorner and scoffer interchangeably which all means mocker. Believers are warned to be careful and be on guard.
LESSON OUTLINES:
TRAITS TO OBSERVE
THE DISPOSITION OF BELIEVERS
1. TRAITS TO OBSERVE
There are some peculiar traits of scoffers. They deny the truths of Scripture and entice others to go along with their error (Jude 4). They refuse to believe the word of the Lord and despise God’s ministers (2 Chronicles 36:16). They question the second coming of the Lord Jesus pointing out the lapse of time and mock those who still wait and yearn for Jesus’ appearance (2 Peter 3:4). They follow ungodly desires and create divisions in the church (2Pet.3:3; Jude 18-19). They have a form of godliness but deny its power (2 Timothy 3:5). They present lofty-sounding ideas to lead people astray (2 Peter 2:1). They incite violent acts (Proverbs 29:8). They are proud people who make the judgment of God light (Isaiah 28:14-15).
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should check themselves to see which of the traits stated above is in their lives and say what they will do to make things right.
2. THE DISPOSITION OF BELIEVERS
The proliferation of scoffers is one of the signs of the last days. (2 Pet.3:3). Hence, it is critically important that, believers:
Take seriously the commands to study and meditate on God’s word (Psalm 1:1-2; Josh.1:8).
Remain in Christ spotless and blameless (2 Peter 3:14; Ephesians 5:27).
Continue to wait for the appearance of the Lord (Titus 2:13).
Weigh every teaching/preaching with the word of God (Acts 17:11).
Know that God is never slack concerning His promises (2 Peter 3:9).
Be established on their holy faith (Jude 20) and remain steadfast to the end (1 Corinthians 16:13; 1 Timothy 6:12).
Try all spirits (1Jn.4:1) and grow in grace (2 Peter 3:18).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: How can we protect ourselves from scoffers?
CONCLUSION: Beware of scoffers and refuse to be one (Psalm 1:1).
QUESTIONS:
Who is a scoffer and what are his characteristics?
What should be the disposition of believers to scoffers?
FURTHER READING:
Monday: 2 Chronicles 36:16 (KJV); But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy.
Tuesday: Nehemiah 2:19 (KJV); But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
Wednesday: Psalm 1:1 (KJV); Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Thursday: Psalm 31:18 (KJV); Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.
Friday: Psalm 123:4 (KJV); Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.
Saturday: Proverbs 1:7 (KJV); The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Sunday: 2 Samuel 12:9 (KJV); Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
ASSIGNMENT: Why do you think there are more scoffers these days than ever before? Give five (5) reasons (2×5=10 Marks).
Sunday School 6 August 2023
TOPIC: Self-Cleansing
MEMORY VERSE: “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” – 2 Corinthians 7:1
BIBLE PASSAGE: Hebrews 10:19-23 (KJV)
19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
21 And having an high priest over the house of God;
22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
LESSON INTRODUCTION: God’s desire is that His. people will be clean outwardly and inwardly (Zechariah 3:4). He loves those whose hearts and lives are perfect towards Him and has made adequate provision for their all-round cleansing (Hebrews 10:22). In Psalm 51:7 David prayed for God’s cleansing. We also have a crucial role to play in this matter. Therefore, we need to examine the issue of self-cleansing carefully.
LESSON OUTLINES
WHAT IS SELF-CLEANSING?
HOW CAN A MAN CLEANSE HIMSELF?
1. WHAT IS SELF-CLEANSING?
Self-cleansing is a conscious and decisive effort put in by man to purge himself of all filthiness (2 Corinthians 7:1) to become whole and acceptable to God, through the help of the Holy Spirit. It involves the thorough sanitation of a life whose filth has been revealed through the mirror of God’s word (Isaiah 6:5). It is a renewal of one’s mind (Romans 12:2). It is putting away evil deeds (Isaiah 1:16), the wickedness of the heart and impure thoughts (Jeremiah 4:14). It is giving no room for sin in one’s life (Romans 6:12-13). It is putting off the old man with his deeds (Ephesians 4:22; Colossians 3:9) and putting on the new man in all righteousness after the image of Christ (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10).
Self-cleansing makes us honourable and useful vessels – 2 Timothy 2:21. It is essential for those that have the hope of eternal life with Jesus – 1 John 3:3. It provides a platform to appear before God blameless and to obtain answers to prayers – Hebrews 10:22; Hebrews 4:6.
2. HOW CAN A MAN CLEANSE HIMSELF?
It is absolutely true that we are purged and cleansed through the shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:14,22). However, the Bible raises a fundamental question in Psalm 119:9, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?
“The Bible also provides the answer, “…by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” Having identified the grey areas in your life, take heed’ to necessary adjustments and make changes show that you fear God. Lay aside weights and besetting sins (Hebrews 12:1). Steer clear of the appearances of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Wash thoroughly in the water of God’s word Ephesians 5:26; Ezekiel 36:25; Hebrews 10:22). Mortify (crush, degrade, kill) the deeds of the flesh (Romans 8:13; Colossians 3:5, 8-9) with the help of the Holy Spirit and draw near to God (James 4:8).
CONCLUSION: If you are indeed in Christ and His Spirit is in you, self-cleansing will not be an uphill task.
QUESTIONS:
In your own words, describe self-cleansing.
Is self-cleansing possible? How?
FURTHER READINGS:
Monday: 2 Timothy 2:21 (KJV) – If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.
Tuesday: Hebrews 4:6 (KJV) – Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
Wednesday: Isaiah 1:16 (KJV) – Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
Thursday: Revelation 7:14 (KJV) – And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Friday: Malachi 3:3 (KJV) – And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.
Saturday: Isaiah 1:18 (KJV) – Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Sunday: 1 John 3:3 (KJV) – And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
ASSIGNMENT: List five (5) things that can make a child of God unclean (2×5=10 Marks).
