TOPIC: Spiritual Sacrifices

MEMORY VERSE: “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” – 1 Peter 2:5 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Hebrews 13:15-16 (KJV)

15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

LESSON OUTLINES:

WHAT ARE SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES?

HOW TO OFFER ACCEPTABLE SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES

1. WHAT ARE SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES?

Spiritual sacrifices are continuous offerings from believers to God in faith. They are words or deeds motivated by a desire to glorify God alone (Heb.13:16). Just as the smoke of the incense ascended in the sanctuary in the Old Testament, so our spiritual sacrifices ascend to God (Ps.141:2; Rev.5:8). These include the believer’s prayers, praises, will, body, time, treasures, talents, and spiritual gifts.

Therefore, the fact that the incense was always burning means we should always pray (Lk.18:1; 1Thess.5:17). Fasting is also a spiritual sacrifice that aids the believer’s prayer (Dan.9:3). God created us to praise Him, and we must offer the ‘sacrifice of praise’ to Him continually (Heb.13:15). Just as Jesus surrendered His will to the Father’s (Lk.22:42), so should we, though it’s an ongoing battle (Rom. 7:18-20). Our talents and spiritual gifts are from God and should be offered for the perfecting of the saints, the work of the ministry, and the edification of the body of Christ (Eph.4:7, 12). Our treasures (financial/material resources) contribute to the spiritual sacrifices to be offered to God, the kingdom work on earth, the ministers of God, and the people in need (Phil.4:18; Prov.19:17; Gal.6:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should share with the class the spiritual sacrifices they have made to God

2. HOW TO OFFER ACCEPTABLE SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES

Believers constitute the new priesthood (1Pet.2:9). Therefore, to offer acceptable spiritual sacrifices, we must appear before God sanctified (Ps.24:3-4; Lev.10:1-3). First, we must present our bodies as ‘living sacrifices’ (Rom.12:1-2; Gal.2:20). Our bodies are the temple of the Lord (1Cor.6:18-20). The believer’s body is yielded to God as an instrument of righteousness (Rom.6:12-13; 8:11-13). This implies that we are to maintain good sexual boundaries (Eph.5:3), refuse to use our bodies for theft, or to bring harm to another person (1Pet.4:15; Col.3:12-13). Second, spiritual sacrifices must be offered obediently (1Sam.15:22); willingly (2Cor.9:6); cheerfully (2Cor.9:7); timely (Eccl.11:6) and in reverence to God (Mal.1:8).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should narrate how they have offered a spiritual sacrifice in a timely manner.

CONCLUSION: Sacrifice is part and parcel of worship. Jesus promised us rewards for every kind action done in His name (Mark.9:41).

QUESTIONS:

What are spiritual sacrifices?

Mention ways believers can offer acceptable spiritual sacrifices to God.

ASSIGNMENT: In line with today’s lesson, mention with biblical references, five (5) people who offered acceptable sacrifices to God.

Topic: Soteria

MEMORY VERSE: “I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord.” – Genesis 49:18 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 19:1-10 (KJV)

1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

INTRODUCTION: ‘Soteria’ is the Greek word for salvation from the root word, ‘Sozo’ which means to save, rescue, or deliver. It describes the rescue or deliverance from danger, destruction, and peril. Sometimes, the Bible uses the word saved or salvation to refer to temporal, physical deliverance, such as Paul’s deliverance from prison (Phil.1:19). More often, the word “salvation” concerns an eternal, spiritual deliverance (Acts 16:30-31). Jesus equated being saved with entering the kingdom of God (Matt.19:24-25). Other concepts that are inherent in salvation include restoration to a state of safety, soundness, health, and well-being as well as preservation from the danger of destruction.

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE MYSTERY OF SALVATION

HINDRANCES TO AND BENEFITS OF SALVATION

1. THE MYSTERY OF SALVATION

The salvation experience occurs in phases. These phases come at different times in the life of a believer. Instant salvation is the first phase of salvation when anyone confesses Christ as Lord and Saviour. It describes everyone’s chance at being saved (2Cor.6:2). It is what everyone has been called unto (Tit.2:11-12). A price has been paid for it through the blood of Jesus (1Jn.1:7-9) and it comes by grace (Eph.2:8) through faith in the Son of God (Acts 4:10-12). It is the prerequisite for the other phase of salvation (John.3:16-17).

The ultimate salvation is the final phase of salvation. It requires that believers play a part (Phil.2:12) as they live for God and avoid distractions (Heb.12:1-2). Instant salvation is the ‘matriculation’ of sin to begin a new life in Christ (2Cor.5:17) while the ultimate salvation is the ‘convocation’ of the saints as life-members of the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ (Matt.5:20). The ultimate salvation requires a strong partnership with the Holy Spirit (Zech.4:6). The individual who has been saved must endure to the end for the ultimate salvation that gives everlasting life with Jesus Christ (Matt.10:22).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should discuss what believers must do to be saved.

2. HINDRANCES TO AND BENEFITS OF SALVATION

Satan has blinded and hardened the hearts of some people to the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ (2Cor.4:4). Several things could also hinder a man from receiving the salvation made available by God through Jesus Christ. These include: fear of persecution (2Tim.3:12); Comfort and riches (Matt.19:21-22; 1Tim.6:9-10); Much intellectual/human achievement (1Tim. 6:20-21); False security (Isa.31:1); Self-righteousness (Rom.10:3); Worldliness (Jam.4:4); Lustful adventure and desires (1Kgs.11:3-4; Eccl.2:9-11); Power and position (Acts 26:28); Covetousness (Lk.12:15); Desire to please men (1Sam.15:24-26); Religious activities (Matt. 23:13); Besetting sins (Heb.12:1); Ignorance (1Tim.1:13).

However, there are several benefits attached to being saved by the Lord Jesus Christ. When we accept God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, we receive: Redemption from the slave-market of sin (Tit.2:14); Forgiveness of sins (Eph.1:7); The promise of eternal life (Rev.5:9-10); Righteousness of God (Rom. 5:17); Freedom from the curse of the law (Gal.3:13); Adoption into God’s family (Gal.4:5); Peace with God (Col.1:18-20); The indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1Cor. 6:19-20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should discuss the some of the blessings they received through salvation

CONCLUSION: If perhaps, you have not embraced instant salvation, you need to do so now. The ultimate salvation is achievable despite all challenges of life.

QUESTIONS:

Distinguish between ‘instant’ and ‘ultimate’ salvation.

Mention some benefits you have enjoyed since you became saved?

ASSIGNMENT: Make a plan to witness Christ to at least five people this week (2×5=10 marks).

 Topic: Who created the devil?

Text: John 1:3

INTRODUCTION: In the last study of John 1:3, we saw that Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things including light and darkness etc. This week, we want to answer these questions? Who created the devils? Why? Why is the devil not yet destroyed? How do we explain Reve.20:7-8, May the Lord Himself explain this deep ;lesson to us. Amen.

Who created the devils? Why? Did God know that Adam and Eve would eat the forbidden fruits in the Garden of Eden? If yes, then why did He get angry with them for doing so? How do I know that God loves me? What must I do to remain secure in His love?

The answers to all these questions reveal one and only one thing: In the first meeting ever held by the Beginning of the beginnings. It was decided that there would be a gigantic Divine Drama. The drama will involve a set of creatures called human beings. They must be able to choose between good and evil. Deut. 30:19, to be able to do this, there must be someone who will be evil totally I John 3:8. A section of these creatures must be specially set-aside for God (Abraham, Isaac – Israel). Later other will be included Ephesians 1:3-6, by Jesus and the Father; John 15:18-19, John 6:44. But after the choice by Jesus you are not eternally secure Phil.2:12.

Because God can remove and replace Matthew 12:33, Romans 11:19. Therefore, we must be careful – Ephesians 5:15-17. Paul is the one who revealed this plan to us Ephesians 3:3-11. How should you behave now that we too know Ephesians 5:1-5, 8-11, 19-20. When is the play “over” as far as an individual is concerned? John 21:23. How soon is the next act in the play?

Romans 13:12. Shall we survive? God is willing Phil.1:16, but are you?

TOPIC: Doctrine Of The Trinity

MEMORY VERSE: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” – 1 John 5:7 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 3:16-17 (KJV)

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The doctrine of the Trinity is foundational to the Christian faith. It is the revelation of who our Almighty God is. God is an infinite Being, existing eternally as three co-equal and infinitely distinct Persons also called the Godhead: God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit. The origin of the doctrine of the Trinity is the Bible, although the word Trinity is not used in the Bible. The word ‘Trinity’ was coined by one of the early Church fathers, by the name ‘Tertullian.’ This doctrine is called ‘Trinitarianism’ and its adherents are called ‘Trinitarians.’ The focus of this study is to clarify the concept of the Trinity by providing the biblical basis for it with further clarifications.

LESSON OUTLINES:

BIBLICAL BASIS

THE EXPLANATION

1. BIBLICAL BASIS

The Old Testament provides glimpses of the Trinity. For example, the Hebrew word for God-“Elohim” – is a plural form of the word ‘El’: hence, in Genesis 1:26, God says (in the plural) “Let us make man in our image.” When God created the heavens and the earth, Jesus was the instrument of God’s creation (Jn.1:1-3; Col.1:15-16), in the company of the Holy Spirit who hovered over the waters (Gen.1:2). Gen.11:7, “Go to, let us go down…” also provides us with the evidence of the three-in-oneness of God. The Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament, also called the Law or the Pentateuch) hinted at the idea of God existing in three Persons and predicted His coming in the flesh (Gen.49:10) to be born in Bethlehem (Mic.5:2). He is not only God’s Son (Isa.9:6) but a Messiah who would be God in the flesh (Zech.2:10-11).

From the very beginning of the church in the New Testament, Christians understood the mystery of the Trinity. For example, John the beloved knew the Son was the Creator (Jn.1:1-3), the “I Am” of the Old Testament (Jn.8:58; Ex.3:14), same with the Father (Jn.10:30; 14:9), and the Judge of all the earth (Jn.5:22), who is to be worshipped as only God is allowed to be (Matt.14:33). Also, the first Christians knew the Holy Spirit was a separate Person (Jn.14:26) who intercedes for us with God (Rom.8:26-27), proving He is a distinct Person from God the Father. The early believers knew that the Father and the Son sent the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit-“another Comforter”-to live in our hearts (Jn.14:16-17, 26; 16:7).

New Testament writers mention all three Persons of the Trinity together numerous times. For instance:

At Jesus’ baptism-Matthew 3:13-17 (voice of the Father, Son baptised, Spirit descending like a dove).

2.At Salvation-1Peter 1:2 (chosen by the Father, sanctified by the Spirit, sprinkled with the blood of Jesus).

At Sanctification-2Corinthians 13:14 (grace of the Lord Jesus, love of God, fellowship of the Holy Spirit).

At Christians’ Baptism-Matthew 28:19 (baptised in one name, yet, three Persons -Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

For a witness-1 John 5:7- For there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why do you believe in the Trinity?

2. THE EXPLANATION

As Christians, we do not believe in three Gods, which is a heresy called ‘Tritheism.’ We do not believe that the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are three “forms” of God -like, steam, water, and ice. This is the heresy called ‘Modalism.’ The egg is comprised of three parts: the yellowish part, the whitish part, and the shell. Despite this, the egg is not three but one.

The doctrine of the Trinity holds that God is ‘one Being’ but ‘three Persons.’ The ‘three persons’ define who God is (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) while the ‘one Being’ defines what God is (Infinite, Omnipresent, Omniscient, etc.). God has ‘one nature,’ but ‘three centres of consciousness.’ This means the Father is God (Gal.1:1), the Son is God (Jn.20:28) and the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4). They are not three gods but only one God (Deut.6:4). The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father, but each is God individually and yet they are together: co-equal, co-eternal, having precisely the same nature and attributes (Almighty, unchangeable, infinitely powerful, wise, just, holy, etc.) and worthy of precisely the same worship, confidence, and obedience.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What is your view of the Trinity?

CONCLUSION: The doctrine of the ‘Trinity’ is Christianity’s most unique, defining and awesome mystery.

What are the biblical basis of the trinity?

LESSON OUTLINE ONE

WHAT IS REPENTANCE?

To repent is to have a change of mind, a change of heart or a change of direction.

It is like a driver going in a wrong direction who suddenly realizes his error, make a U-turn and faces the right direction. The prodigal son who abandoned his farther in Luke15:17-21 changed his mind and returned to the father.

To repent is to turn away from sin and turn to righteousness.

Zacchaeus repented of his sinful ways and Jesus confirmed that salvation had come into his house. Luke 19:8-9

To repent is to turn away from serving the devil and letting Jesus Christ become the master. Saul the persecutor of the church – Act 8:3, repented and became Paul the servant of Jesus Christ. Romans 1:1

LESSONS OUTLINE TWO

RESULTS OF REPENTANCE

Forgiveness of sins. Acts 5:31

God gives a new heart. Ezekiel. 36:26

Transformation. Ephesians 4:22-24

Deliverance from woes and curses. Galatians 3:13-14

Access to exceeding great and precious promises. 2 Peter 1:4

Having access to new nature and new abilities 2 corinthians 5:17

ACTIVITY: List few names of those that refused the offer of salvation in the Bible

SUMMARY: When you repent from your sin, you would be referred to His scene (divine location of His mercy).

CONCLUSION: The person that refuse to repent will perish – Luke 13:5. However, God does not want anyone to perish but that all should come to repentance – 2 Peter 3:9. That is why Luke 15:10 says that Angels rejoice in heaven over one sinner that repents.

Therefore repentance should not be delayed. Repent NOW!!!

Topic: Secrets To Knowing God

MEMORY VERSE: “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” – Philippians 3:10

BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 17:22-27 (KJV)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

INTRODUCTION:

Within all of us, there exists a strong desire to be known and to know others. More importantly, there is a void in every individual – a quest to know their creator, even if they are not professed believers in God. The apostle Paul expressed his desire to truly know God (Phil.3:10). It is therefore important to address the issue of seeking and truly knowing God.

LESSON OUTLINES:

SEEKING GOD IS INEVITABLE

SECRETS TO TRULY KNOWING GOD

1. SEEKING GOD IS INEVITABLE

A. Our desire to seek and know more of God is the essence of true life (Jn.17:3; Jer.50:4).

B. The thoughts of God should be paramount in our minds because they will determine the value and direction of our lives (Ps. 48:9; 63:6).

C. Seeking God, then, is an ongoing responsibility and privilege for all Christians (Job 5:8).

D. Therefore, Scriptures admonish us to seek God:

i. Wholeheartedly (Deut.4:29).

ii. Early in life (Ps.63:1; Eccl.12:1).

iii. Continually (Ps.105:4).

iv. With joy (Ps. 70:4).

v. By prayer and supplications

vi. With fasting (Dan.9:3).

vii. Through His righteousness (Matt.6:33).

viii. By studying His word (Jn. 5:39).

E. Assuredly, those who seek God under the conditions stated above shall:

i. Find Him (Jer. 29:13).

ii. Be satisfied (Matt. 5:6).

iii. Understand all things (Prov. 28:5).

iv. Not lack any good thing (Ps.34:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Class should mention others ways through which we can seek God.

2. SECRETS TO TRULY KNOWING GOD

A. In an attempt to know God, we must:

i. Receive Jesus Christ into our lives (Jn.1:12): Jesus makes it clear that He alone is the way to Heaven and personal knowledge of God (Jn.14:6-9).

ii. Understand that the Bible is God’s word and a revelation of Himself, His promises, and His will (Jn.1:1; Ps.119:105). The Bible is essentially a love letter written to us from a loving God who created us to know Him intimately (2 Tim. 3:14-17).

iii. Be committed to obeying what we read in the Scriptures (Tit.1:16; Jn.15:14). We were created to do good works (Eph.2:10). Not only must we read and understand God’s word, but we must also apply doctrines obediently and remain faithful (Jam.1:21-22).

iv. Be committed to prayer, personal devotion, fellowship with brethren (Heb.10:25) and, always worship God in spirit and in truth (Jn.4:23-24).

v. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us always (Rom. 8:14, 26-27).

B. Then, our lives can be filled with God, and we can experience knowing Him intimately.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share with the class things that have increased their knowledge of God.

CONCLUSION: If we genuinely hunger and thirst to know God, He will reveal Himself to us.
